The flock just keeps growing. I can care for it on a large scale, but it's more feasible to stay on top of things on a more, I guess… relational level if there's more than just one person at the head," they explain with a nod, seeming satisfied with themself. And oddly, it's their forthright manner here that's throwing him off guard, more than anything.
Through the crown, he had listened in on their sermons. They were a talented preacher, sometimes fearsome and sometimes loving, always grandiose. He'd drunk deep of the devotion their fervor inspired, and of their own fidelity to the gospel in their hand, penned carefully in his name. Their own worship.
And now, they spoke to him as if they were haggling with one of the vendors on the outskirts. Like that poorly disguised cannibal who sold them fish.

And that's what I did.
I seized control of most of hell. It was pretty much impossible to kill the warden of hell himself, Lucifer morningstar.
So I just became friends with him instead.
He gave me access to travel across the rings and seized even more territories.
What a great guy!Everyday my cult grew. It grew so large you couldn't even turn a corner without seeing one of my hooded cultists.
But... Power is surprisingly boring.
When you have everything you ever wanted handed to you in a golden plate... you soon realize the importance of the little things.
Arguing with low-life demons... Getting shit-talked on the streets... Being robbed by the usual thug.
I want to go back to the old days...
So... I disappeared.Never to be seen again.

Gregory paused, staring.
The weird cat-salamander thing that had come up behind him, all blue and pink with the biggest purple eyes Gregory had ever seen, stared back, unblinking. He SWORE he could see it vibrating in place, like the rush of a million sugar highs was rushing through its body all at once. It didn’t seem bothered by the rain, water rolling off its back, and the boy felt suddenly, unfairly jealous at it’s obvious lack of discomfort when here HE was, standing there, shivering and miserable and soaked to the bone.
“What the hell are YOU supposed to be?” He snapped.
It squeaked. Gregory stared into those huge eyes, pupils big enough to see his soul reflected back in them, and balled up the old sock and threw it at the thing before bolting off into the rain.
The sock hit him in the back of the head with a wet splat a second later, and the pitter-patter of little paws followed him back to his box.
OR: Gregory adopts/is adopted by a bunch of Slugcats. The animatronics (and Peepaw Afton) are not prepared.
