“Hi,” Luca says, apologetic. “Sorry I’m late.”
Ilya turns his head, then blinks. Shane follows his line of sight, expression shifting.
There’s a sharp line of eyeliner across Luca’s waterline, smeared a little on the bottom. Under the lighting, the minuscule amount of white glitter dabbed at the corner and bottom of eyes twinkles. His shirt is tightly fit, a little sheer, cut off just above his black pants. There’s a line of skin between his shirt and pants, the smallest peek of a thin, black tattoo visible on his hip. Silver glints: there’s a bout of jewelry scattered across his body— earrings, a plastic Casio watch, a necklace hanging from his neck.
“You look like you could ruin someone’s life,” LaPointe blurts out.

Summary

He goes all in and ends up making his teammate cry in the locker room. It’s the start of a beautiful friendship.
Or: Troy Barrett deserves to have one messy, cringe-girl breakdown in front of his team. He earned it.

Ilya takes a conspicuously long sip of his champagne and shares a look with Yuna who has stopped typing on her phone. “It is not Barrett's night I think.”

He fumbled in his right trouser pocket, then his left, then his jacket pockets increasingly frantically, checking them all a second time in case he had somehow missed the thin piece of plastic he needed.
It wasn’t there.
Shane had a horrible suspicion he knew where it was.
He thought back to draping his jacket over the back of the couch in Rozanov’s hotel room, folding his shirt and trousers and putting them in the same spot. His keycard must still be in Rozanov’s room.
He briefly considered just sleeping in the hallway.

Summary
Troy Barrett is traded to the Ottawa Centaurs after bringing up the assault allegations against Dallas Kent and attacking the star-centre at practice. After years of being treated poorly by the Toronto Guardians, he struggles to adapt to the Centaurs' more accepting nature. Over the course of his first year with the Centaurs, he faces repercussions for speaking out against Dallas, deals with threats from the league, navigates a whole new team that is primed to hate him, and faces several media scandals.
This is pre Troy/Harris, and Shane/Ilya is not mentioned, but I picture it being in the background.

What follows is enough public scrutiny and backlash from his team that it has him questioning if he made the right decision. Until moments with Ilya and the Raiders show him exactly why he chose correctly.

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

Summary
Montreal comes into Ottawa looking for blood.
They get a rookie with a mouth on him instead.
It’s supposed to be just another tight, physical game against the Voyageurs. Hard checks, ugly chirps, Rozanov bleeding a little for dramatic effect, the usual. Shane thinks he’s prepared. Ilya is, as always, one mildly illegal hit away from throwing hands. Bood is having the time of his life.
No one, however, is prepared for Luca Haas.
Nineteen. Polite. Painfully earnest. Carries art supplies in his backpack. Has never had an on-ice fight.
Until he does.
A story about rivalry, locker room insanity, rookie feral awakenings, and the exact moment Ottawa realizes their baby has teeth.

Summary
Shane has been an Ottawa Centaur for a month and is fitting in with the team. But now he has to face the Montreal Voyageurs for the first time since leaving. At least it is a home game. What could go wrong?
Ilya has made it clear to the Centaurs how this game is going to go. Win the game, watch Shane’s back and send Montreal home crying. But Ilya is faced with watching his worst nightmare from 2017 happen again in front of his eyes. Shane gets hit. Bad.

It was a YouTube video. A young woman sat in the thumbnail of the foreground with pictures of him floating next to her head. The titled said, Undeniable PROOF that Shane Hollander is Gay. The image of this young girl with brown hair had been sent to him dozens of times in the last 30 minutes. The look on her face, he felt, was molded purposefully into an aesthetic portrait of shock and excitement, almost as if she was doing the world a favor.
