Masaru is at work when her world begins to splinter open, like a crack in the sidewalk, a fault line that divides her entire life in two. The news reporters air the footage over the course of the day, the live broadcast feed filled with the sounds of destruction.
The cameras had only shown it for a split second, their aerial footage sweeping across the scene of battle. The news feed prattles on, trying to report on the indistinct bodies that shoot across the screen like an incoherent montage of the war waging just a few feet away.
But Mitsuki spots him the second he takes that blow, the shot that lingered on him right after he went down before cutting away. There is no sound of the way his body had been pierced, she wouldn’t have heard it even if there was.
Or, Mitsuki learning to put together the pieces of her son's life, from the beginning all the way to the very end.
