Summary
You're four when the world ends and the slow death of your family begins. You're fourteen and living miserably in the QZ when you see him for the first time, knuckles split and bleeding, wearing violence like a shroud. Eighteen when he earns your teenage infatuation, born out of loneliness and a misplaced need for attention. And then he barely blinks when he breaks your tender heart.
It's the last straw after a lifetime of shit and the QZ feels more like a prison than a home. Escaping, you survive for nine years on your own. Growing strong, bitter, and guarded, the last thing on your mind is your humiliating juvenile years. And then you find Jackson. And Joel Miller, alive, well, and totally clueless as to why Jackson's newest resident can't be in the same room with him for more than two minutes.

Summary
Twelve years is a long time to know someone, even if you don't particularly get along. Sometimes empathy and understanding are built piece by stressful piece, and stability, not power, can be a reason to gravitate towards someone. Even mortals brushing the limits of divinity are just people infected with an isolating madness; just as flawed, just as weary, just as alone. It is relief that guides a person to seek out another's presence, and that can be enough.
TLDR: A linear series of moments showcasing an unlikely bond between two very different people.

“Ellie,” she says, a gentler version of her usual command but no less firm. “You can’t just drag him away. I need to talk to him first.”
The little girl–Ellie–rolls her eyes in a gesture that looks far too old to be coming from such a small child, but she releases him, though she tugs on his shirt when he looks back to Marlene, partially sure he’s having a stroke.
“Come play with me after, okay?” She asks with the same sense of command Marlene speaks in.
Before he can say anything at all in response to that, she’s scampering off around the corner.
He looks back to Marlene, begging for her to make some kind of sense out of this. Marlene smiles a little wryly–a smile that looks a little tired at the same time–and gestures for him to sit. On slightly halting legs, he does.
“That’s Ellie,” Marlene says, unnecessarily. “And she’s your new assignment.”

‘In a single instant, everything changed.’
When people say those words, it’s rarely taken seriously. An exaggeration some would call it – a grand overstatement and magnification for the mass of a jeering audience. Perhaps a punchline for a newspaper article, headlined in bold, black ink.
But your ‘single instant’ was, so to speak, very much a reality. And it started the way most distributed media articles do – grimly. Horrifically.
The more you thought about it, oh, and think you did, the more it resonated with you. Your life was an essay; an attention grabber. One tragedy after another typed out in Times New Roman and stamped in size twelve; double-spaced for ease of sight.
A white van, inlaid with tinted windows, a gun in the back of your spine…and a man with nothing visible but a pair of brown eyes that glinted amber from under a balaclava.
That was the instant, you knew, and then everything had changed.
It would have been kinder to take the bullet.
