Everytime, without fail, Jason will jolt awake with tears running down his face and sweat gluing his hair down onto his face. His heart is pounding in his chest, reminiscent of Jason banging on the top of his casket.
Jason shakes his head and rubs harshly at his face, flinching when a hand gently grabs his wrist with a firm grip. He looks up and comes eye to eye with Bruce, the older man’s face is pinched, his mouth pulled into a thin line and his eyebrows pulled into a harsh furrow.
“Jaylad," Bruce whispers, his voice low and soft and no where near his Batman growl. And suddenly, Jason feels like a scared twelve year again as fresh tears roll down his cheeks and he falls forward into his dad’s Bruce’s chest. “Oh, Jaylad. I’m here, son. Let it out, your dad is here. I got you.”

“Doesn't he ever blink?" Robin asks suddenly, making Nightwing twitch as he’s yanked out of his brewing thoughts.
“What?" Nightwing looks down at his younger brother, his thought process freezing at the odd question.
“This kid, Tim," Robin starts, not sparing a glance away from the screen in front of them, “he hardly ever blinks. When he does blink, he blinks slow.”
“Slow?” Batman repeats, promoting the youngest vigilante to elaborate.
“Yeah," Robin nods and turns to face Nightwing and Batman fully. “You know how cats will blink slowly at someone, or something. That’s how Tim blinks.”

“Red, you got a kid you never told me about?” He asks Matt, and even when he’s joking his voices scrapes out of his throat like it’s being forced, though he sounds like he’s trying for tender. Peter shuts his jaw once he realises it has fallen open, and Matt laughs.
“Frank this is Peter; Peter, Frank,” Matt introduces, and Frank looks at Peter properly. Peter watches as Frank gives him a quick once over, clearly amused at Peter’s outfit choice, and Peter suddenly remembers that he isn’t wearing a binder.

Summary
The crushing reality of hindsight, really, is that when it hits there’s nothing left but a front row seat to every second of every failure, speckled with the dust of what might have been. It’s painful, it’s meant to be. It’s the consequence of holding something so beautiful and precious, and not caring enough to stop its fall.
In this moment, sitting alone in his room surrounded by scrap memories drawn out in cheap pencils and charcoal, crooked smiles and warm eyes and the leaden weight of regret in his chest, it feels like an explosion he didn’t move far enough away from. It feels like his own ruin rushing up to meet him, his own hand on the trigger. Everything he could have ever wanted offered up to him on a silver platter and he tipped the whole damn thing into the dirt.

Soap’s heart clenched painfully another time.
He had hoped that it could become more, just like he had hoped that the 141 could become more, but he was fucking stupid.
He was a soldier, easily exchangeable for the team, and he was, if anything, a friend with benefits, for Ghost. Easily exchangeable as well.

There’s a ghost haunting the 141 common room. At least, Soap is about 80% sure there is, which is, in fairness, realistically about as sure as anyone could reasonably be about spooks haunting their workplace. He’s not stupid, he knows no one else is going to believe him if he brings it up. The scorn if he suddenly starts harping on about ghosties and ghoulies.
None of that negates the fact that there definitely is one though. Probably.

Soap brings his hand closer to his face, squinting hard. Making his already pounding headache worse. This isn’t real. Has to be a prank. For some reason, Gaz must’ve sneaked in here. Funny guy.
He’s heard—even seen it, once—the stories. It’s rare, but real, or at least an elaborate hoax, spanning countries and hundreds of years.
People brought together, Fate intervening. Everyone is supposed to have one, a red thread leading and binding them to the person they’re supposed to spend their life with, though Soap isn’t sure how true that is. No one falls in love once. But it’s not just for love, as he heard it. Maybe this is that. He’s not in love with Ghost. Wants him, sure, crushing…not something he wants to admit to in the cold light of day, but okay.
It’s not love.
