“There’s something different about the captain today,” Rollon murmured.

“How so?” Anleifr glanced over at where Illuga had taken a seat, nose already deep in some report or another. “I don’t see anything off with the fellow.”

“That’s the thing: I can’t figure it out either. But there’s definitely something off with him today.”

The Ratniki (and friends) notice Illuga’s begun wearing new earrings.

    Summary

When Flins and the Traveler face off against the phantom Rerir at Starsand Shoal with the intention to stop him from regaining his true form, Rerir reveals a devastating repercussion from the way Flins has been keeping a fragment of Rerir's heart in his lantern: through the resonation of the Abyss, and the close proximity to Flins' true form, he has come to see what lies in Flins' heart.

And since Flins has taken his heart, he's now going to take Flins' in revenge.

There’s only one place Rerir is going. There’s only one, exact thing that Flins’ heart could lead Rerir directly to.
