The only thing in the world is this riverbank, the landscape disappearing into the haze for miles. Hawkeye thinks he could follow this river to the ends of the earth and still never find another living soul.

He didn’t know why he kept the chopper pad for last. He realized, dimly, as he climbed, that the hill should be above the water. It wasn’t, though. The flood remained the same depth as BJ climbed and climbed, much higher than he remembered the hill being. His legs ached. The sun was too hot. Everything was wrong, but if he could just find Hawkeye, then something would be alright. They could go home, maybe. If everyone was gone and the war was over, then they must be allowed to go home. Hawkeye could make French toast, and take his laundry down. BJ could … do something. BJ could dry out his shoes.
BJ's dreams of a wounded and reproachful Hawkeye seem to predict the future. But maybe that's because, for BJ, the future has already happened. Or maybe coming home from a war just isn't all it's cracked up to be.

It's not that he wants to reject his masculinity. He doesn't catch himself wishing for a body unlike his own, for a life unlike the one he's lived. But he thinks he catches glimpses of kinship in Margaret from time to time, how she possesses so much softness, how she sometimes hungers for the hard edges of masculinity. She often looks like she's not sure if she wants to have it for herself or simply admire it in the men around her.
He gets it. He really fucking does. He's never knows if he's craving beautiful women or if he wants to put a little of their femininity on just to soften his edges. Nothing much. He wonders how his legs might look in a pair of stockings. If even just a hint of rouge or lipstick might...
It creeps in, the nerves. He can't call it shame, not really. He doesn't hate the curiosity in his chest. But he's not sure beauty is made for Hawkeye Pierce.

Summary
If there was anything that Hawkeye Pierce hated, it was being sick.
It could be rightfully debated that swimmer’s itch and wet socks would come in a close second; tied, of course, with Major Burns on what most would consider a good day. Whichever came first on the list, however, didn’t matter much to the captain as the beginning symptoms of a fall flu set in. It started mildly, pressure in the sinus leading to mild headache, sniffles, and sneezes. Most of which Hawkeye conveniently blamed on allergies, the war, or whatever slop was served at breakfast that day. For the most part, everyone shoved off the symptoms as just another part of his antics.
That is, everyone except for a certain BJ Hunnicutt.
