“Mary,” Remus choked on his tears, “where is his daughter?”
She frowned, brows furrowed. Shaking her head, Mary blinked drunkenly, eyes glassy and dazed.
“James and Lily had a son,” she grunted, clumsily reaching for another bottle of butterbeer. “Harry . . . the Boy-Who-Lived . . .”
“Sirius,” Remus said firmly, nearly spitting the name out. He wanted nothing more than to get drunk enough to forget about Sirius too, but there were more pressing matters.
Mary stared at Remus for a moment. She appeared to be thinking hard, trying to remember through the alcohol, but then it fizzled behind her eyes into something chillingly blank.
“Whose daughter?” Mary said, squinting at Remus.

“You seem familiar to me somehow, boy,” the Hat’s voice echoed directly in his mind as the brim touched his head. “We’ve done this before, haven’t we, little Malfoy?”
A violent shiver wracked his frame. The familiar, living ghosts of his past surrounded him, each one a monument to his future failures. The knowledge that his own actions had directly contributed to their fated ends twisted in his gut. A wave of nausea crested, leaving him cold, clammy, and trembling. He shook his head, a minute, desperate gesture.
“Please. Don’t…” he wheezed, his voice emerging small and pathetic. It was strange to hear it, stripped of its years and its bitterness.
“You belong in Slytherin with the rest of your ilk,” the Hat mused, “but something tells me that isn’t what you want anymore, is it?”
“You can put me in whatever house you think is best,” Draco whispered, the words a fervent prayer. “Just don’t put me with the snakes.”
