Summary
Beatrice Santello was never one to expect help from anybody in these last painful two years since her mother died. She'd grown accustomed to long work hours, monotonous daily chores, and a constant feeling of exhaustion that loomed over her every day. So it came as no small surprise then when Mae Borowski, her reunited childhood friend, showed up hunting for a job at the Ol' Pickaxe. Even more surprising then that was the cheery feline landed a position in the store and had been a massive help for relieving Bea's stressful workload.
A month had passed since Mae got hired, and now Bea's father was starting to show up around the store as well, even offering to help on several occasions. Bea didn't dare raise her hopes for eventually getting out of Possum Springs, but with the faint possibility of her father taking back the store, Bea's life was now refueled with passion and purpose. Little was she aware though that massive changes to her life were coming much sooner than she could've predicted.

There was a lot going on in Possum Springs recently. Not for Mae of course, but for everyone else in town. It was all moving so fast winter became a snowy, chilly blur. With Gregg and Angus focusing on “The Plan”, Bea taking over her father’s store, and her parents trying to save the house, Mae thought now would be as good a time as any to sort herself out and rekindle her own plans for the future (maybe).Needless to say, the resurfacing of unsettling dreams and cryptic visions weren’t necessarily helping matters. Oh, and being kidnapped by a vengeful (and surprisingly extensive) cult certainly wasn’t helping things, either.
Meanwhile in the woods, deep beneath the earth, a hungry darkness hums a haunting tune. And Mae can't get it out of her head.

(Spoiler Heavy) It's been a month and a half since the Mine Incident, and Mae Borowski isn't feeling much better; she's having nightmares featuring an unmasked Eide, but unable to see the face of the person she involuntarily killed tortures her on a daily basis. Mae's only sources of distraction are Gregg and Angus, who are moving to Bright Harbor in a few weeks, and Beatrice, who's been acting strange around Mae. Selmers offers to let her help make a new poem, and Mae gladly accepts, but unknown to her, it sets off a chain of events that lead to her answering a question she's long ignored: Just how far will Mae go to keep her friends safe?
