“Let me get this straight.” She downs the rest of her drink, making those horrible slurping sounds she always does and that Buck hates with every fiber of his being. “You’re dating another man?” She switches her straw from her empty glass over to Buck’s drink. He lets her.
This always happens. Taylor is perpetually thirsty and Buck doesn’t really mind when she steals sips from his drink. He often forgets about it and lets all the ice melt, so it becomes a watery mess. In exchange, Taylor lets Buck steal from her plate. “Yup.” He replies to her, eats the last nacho.
“And it’s not Eddie?”

But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.

Evan is snapped out of his thoughts, or rather his studying of Eddie’s eyelashes on his cheeks when Eddie speaks again.
“Huh?” he questions, the other’s words not registering in his mind.
Eddie laughs again— that laugh that goes straight to Evan’s heart. “I said, are you visiting for the summer?” and the smile that Eddie is giving him right now, it's the brightest and warmest Evan’s ever seen.
“Oh.” Evan bites down at his lip, a shy smile forming on his lips. “Yeah, yeah I’m visiting from Pennsylvania with my grandparents.”

It was no secret to anyone paying attention how much Chim loved Buck, even if he often pretended to be exasperated with him.
Hen nodded solemnly. “One of the many people who wouldn’t even acknowledge me when I started.”
It was news to Eddie, and apparently Ravi too, but not Cap, who resolutely stared down at the table in front of him, shaking his head.
“Oh, so he fucking sucks.” Ravi contributed casually, never one to pull punches with his thoughts.

Looking at Evan is hard sometimes, the same way looking into the sun without blinking is hard, but looking away is even harder because Evan has a smile that lights up a room and when he laughs, his eyes crinkle at the corners.
Eddie has wanted him since the moment they met, and while that was easy to ignore - this is harder. This, that's Evan's humor and the way he cares too much about the people around him and not nearly enough about himself. It's the way he'll memorize random fun facts he's never going to need but still doesn't know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars, and it's his complete disregard for personal space, highlighted every time his shoulder bumps Eddie's when they're walking next to each other.

Eddie marveled at the stone sculptures. He wondered did they feel as he felt, this solid immovable force? Did they desire to live beyond museum walls, full of crown molding and marbled floors? Or were they content, captured in a lover's embrace immortalized forever?
Buck walked toward him, broad shoulders bumping against his. Face turned upward to the sculpture of two lovers, he tilted his head down in Eddie's direction.
"You're just like 'em you know," he said.
Eddie felt fear seize in his chest, eyes flickering up at the statue once more.
With further prompting and the ghost of a smile on reddened lips - from the berry hibiscus tea - he continued by saying, "You're softness made of stone."
And with a soft exhalation that sounded like a prayer Buck added, "And just as beautiful."

Maddie rolls her eyes with a fond smile. "I assume there would be other evidence."
"I would never be so sloppy."
"Again, this would be more convincing if you hadn't immediately written murder right at the top of your list."

The little dots pop up immediately, which Chris wasn’t expecting.
I’m not sure. I do know that it technically wasn’t a box, it was a pithos, which is like a big jar they used for storage. Box is a mistranslation, but it became so widely used that we all just roll with it now.
It’s a very classic Buck response. The dots keep going.
On that note, “hope” isn’t an exact translation either. Another way that people translate it is “deceptive expectation.” Hope isn’t necessarily deceptive, and we tend to use it in a positive way, so it’s maybe not the BEST word to use, but I guess in English we don’t have a better one for “deceptive expectation” and “hope” sounds pithier.
