Summary
The voice had always been around, Eddie remembers it, like a stream of consciousness that babbled incoherently to the point where Eddie just tuned it out.
But then the voice started speaking directly to him. Conversing like he was a whole person standing right in front of him. Like he could see what was happening around Eddie.
Eddie shook his head. No one was talking to him, and Eddie most certainly was not talking back.
He wouldn’t talk to the boy in his head ever again. There was no boy in his head.

Summary
Divergence from chapter 7 to chapter 17, where Buck tells Hen – and only Hen – about Eddie and Chris. Hen takes it to mean he is married for real and not ready to be out at work, so covers for him, as well as lend a listening ear. It’s only when Eddie joins the 118 that she figures out that they’re not married-married. Against her will, she gets caught up in the dumbassery that is Buck and Eddie’s marriage, causing them to confess early.

Summary
Eddie and Buck lie about their relationship and the reveal is a big part of the plot, however, before the reveal happens there were so many moments where everyone could have found out. So, these are AUAUs on the main verse where people find out. (I've been calling them AUAUs, because it sounds like a siren when you say it out loud).

As bills pile up, the best move is for them to get married, just for convenience, they’ll divorce when Eddie comes back from his re-enlistment.
Then Eddie gets injured and it’s just easier to stay married for a little longer, while Buck gets started at the 118. However, Buck doesn’t mention his ‘husband’ and kid, not feeling like they’re his to keep. When Eddie gets the offer from Bobby, they decide to lie and pretend they don’t know each other, so they can work together.
The whole lie gets out of hand as feelings start to become real, until it all comes to a head in the aftermath of the fire engine explosion.
AKA: Secret marriage of convenience buddie slow burn AU, where Buck and Eddie have been married for years so Buck could adopt Chris and no one at the 118 knows.

Summary
“Eddie? What’s wrong? There’s no way I missed something, look, we went over everything thrice—”
Oh, god, Buck has retrieved his clipboard from wherever in Eddie’s house he’d stashed it last time. He’s waving it around as he speaks.
“Information about my spouse,” Eddie says blankly.
Buck looks confused. He flips through the pages on his clipboard. “No, look, we definitely-”
“Not Shannon,” Eddie interrupts. “My current spouse.”
Buck, understandably, looks even more confused. Then he seems to actually comprehend what Eddie is saying, and he shoots him a devastated look. “You’re- you’re married? When? To whom?”
“I… I didn’t know I was married. I don’t. I don’t think I am? But they seem to think I am. And they think…” Eddie pauses. Wets his lips. “I think… I think they think I’m married to you.”
Buck and Eddie get married the night of Chimney's bachelor party. Buck and Eddie do not know they got married the night of Chimney's birthday party. At least, they don't until months later, when Chris' new school asks Eddie for documentation of his spouse: one Mr. Buck Diaz.

“Family doesn’t have to be you, and Christopher, and a woman that could maybe be his mother. It can just be you and Christopher. It can be you, and Christopher, and the people around you that love you enough to never stop trying.”
“Like Buck.” Eddie doesn’t mean to voice it, but it feels nice to do it anyway.
“Sure,” Frank nods. There is a smile on his face, one that Eddie doesn’t think he’s seen before. “Like Buck.”

Summary
With Christopher in El Paso and Mara pulled out of custody, there's a lot of parents around the 118 that are missing their kids, and a lot of comfort that can be found with each other.
_____
“Exactly,” Karen jumped in. “All four of us are going through a lot right now. It’s hard to miss children, especially when you know they’re safe and okay, just not with you.”
“Which is why you wanted the four of us to hang out more?” It was obvious now, to Eddie. He felt a little guilty about it, but he had almost forgotten that Hen and Karen were also missing a child. It was so easy to be wrapped up into just thinking about Chris, Chris, Chris, that the concept that anyone else might also be able to understand what he was going through had completely escaped him.
“Right!” Karen sounded pleased. “I thought if you guys were anything like the two of us, you’re feeling unmotivated, and maybe spending a lot more time lazing around and being sad than you normally would.”
“Lots more to be sad about than usual,” Eddie said slowly.
“Exactly. And I thought that, maybe, the four of us could hold each other accountable. Spend time together once a week and go out and do something.”

After almost eight years of being Arthur’s manservant and friend, Merlin was pretty certain that he’d seen almost everything and that nothing could truly surprise him anymore. Goblins, trolls, love spells, donkeys - he'd seen it all. But nothing could have prepared him for this: Arthur under the influence of a truth serum that showed them all just how much the king liked to keep to himself. Usually.

“You’re a liar, Buckley,” he says. Buck just stares at him. He looks gorgeous.
“What? Why?”
“This was nothing like kissing a woman. This was nothing like kissing anyone else,” Eddie argues, and he almost sounds mad about it. He avoids his eyes, and then he gets up from the couch so suddenly that Buck feels like someone dumped a bucket of ice cold water on him.
or, It takes 5 kisses (and a little meddling from Christopher) for Buck to finally realize that Eddie might actually love him back.

Summary
“Well, we’re doing a fancy dinner and mini golf and karaoke,” Buck says, “and those are kinda date activities anyway, right?”
“Right,” Eddie says slowly. “Except it’s Chim’s bachelor party, so we can hardly bring dates along, even if we could find them. That’d be weird.”
“Well,” Buck says, “I was thinking… what if we were each other’s dates?”
Eddie’s brain bluescreens for a moment.
Buck must take his total lack of reaction for disagreement, because he hurriedly says, “Like, a pretend date. That way we could test out our, like you said, moves on each other. And then be totally truthful about whether they worked or not. So we get honest feedback and we don’t have to worry about finding someone to try them out on and we can still make it to Chim’s party. And then give Chris some advice before Sunday. Right? Does that make sense?”
or, chris wants dating advice and it turns out taking your best friend on a pretend date to practice being as romantic as possible is not a good idea in theory or in practice, considering the pesky being-in-unrequited-love of it all

Summary
His brain plays back the conversation he had earlier with Christopher’s teacher. How she thought he was Chris’ father. How she kept referring to him as Christopher’s parent. How it made him feel bad because he wasn’t, and it was like he was unrightfully taking a title that belonged to Eddie. Even if it was just one teacher at school.
He feels guilty that he didn’t correct her.
At first he thought it was because he didn’t want to embarrass her, didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable. But he quickly realized it's probably because he doesn't really mind being seen as Chris’ father. Which felt unfair to Eddie-his actual father- and to Christopher. Because Buck has no right to be considered as Christopher’s parent. Has no right to see Chris– to love him like a son.

Summary
The first time he sets foot inside of a Church after he moves is when Shannon dies. He carries her coffin to the altar and doesn’t cry.
The second time is years later, when Buck gets struck down from the ladder by lightning, stops breathing for three minutes and seventeen seconds and Eddie performs CPR the whole way to the hospital. He tries to breathe life back into Buck’s body, and silently prays to a God he’s sure has forgotten and abandoned him. He cracks Buck’s ribs trying to get his heart pumping again, and when it does, Eddie cries.
The third time Eddie steps inside of a church it’s three pm on a Thursday and he has the day off. Buck is out with Tommy somewhere and can’t hang out, and Eddie can’t help the feeling of jealousy that runs through him like a wave. Even though Buck has been always at least three feet from Eddie for the past three days.
The third time he walks into the 'house of God', it’s four days after his parents came all the way from El Paso to take Christopher.

“I mean, hell, kid, you’re basically raising a kid together already.”
Buck’s eyes widened visibly at that, because… what the hell? Because now, he was more confused than before, but also… things were clicking. They just weren’t clicking in a way that made it any less confusing.
“Wait, wait. Wait wait wait.” Buck’s hands raised, and he was finally still. “I’m… I’m talking about Tommy Kinard. Who are you talking about?” It was a dumb question, and Buck knew it was, because the mention of coparenting could only relate to one person, and the notion of him trying to get someone’s attention… and the army thing… it…
“Oh.” Bobby’s mouth was tightly shut, looking a little more bashful than Buck had seen him… possibly ever. “I seem to have misunderstood.”

Summary
Frank sets his pen down and leans forward slightly, looking straight at Eddie like a butterfly he’s securing behind glass. He fights the urge to squirm as Frank pushes the final pin in place. “But is it what you want?”
The room suddenly seems very quiet, the thrum of Eddie’s blood in his ears very loud.
“Yes?” He says after a long moment. His voice is wobbly, unsure, testing the ice to see if it can bear his weight.
The word offers no comfort. No rush of certainty floods through him and steels his bones for another try. The ice cracks. If he stays where he is another second, he’ll be plunged into the freezing river.
He starts to form a no that dies premature on his lips, stillborn.
And underneath it, the terrifying truth.
“I don’t know,” Eddie says faintly, staring at his hands. Hands that have pulled a trigger, hands that have pressed the lifeblood back into someone’s body. “I don’t know.”
In which, over the course of a summer, Eddie Diaz has several revelations, gets his son back, unpacks a lifetime of shame and guilt, and just maybe manages to find what he’s been looking for all along.
