Summary
"If I do," Derek decides, shifting uncomfortably on his feet, voice softer than he'd meant, waving an encompassing hand around, "will you take all this down?"
Stiles narrows his eyes, seems to run through a number of possible loopholes before relenting, "Fine."
"It was my older brother's favorite holiday." Stiles' heart trips a little, but remains mostly steady, the flowers in his scent gathering droplets of rain as his breath hitches slightly. "And my mom's. We used to—. There was a way we'd—." He trails off, because putting things into words can be a struggle for him when he isn't biting them out or tricking someone or defending himself, which is probably why he'd been such a shit Alpha.
Stiles doesn't tell him he can or should stop, but there's something devastatingly understanding in his eyes, like he'd get it if Derek stopped, shut him out, but there're steel shavings glinting in that honey, and there's no doubt in Derek's mind that if he stops now, all these christmas decorations are staying up.
(He could probably take them all down on his own, but Stiles put them there, dedicated thought and time into it, and Derek doesn't know why that matters, but it does.)

“Well Stiles, you told me a few weeks ago that you thought Derek was leading a cult.”
At that Derek whipped his head toward Stiles in shock. “You thought I was a cult leader?”
Stiles will not be shamed. “Well, either you or Peter. Peter made more sense, but since he deferred to you that one time I was a little unsure. I mean, what else could I think with all the weird shit going on. You, hanging out with random high school seniors, doing secret things, ordering them around like you are their parent, them actually doing what you tell them. It’s really weird, okay?”
“Are you familiar with Harry Potter?” Derek asks.
Talk about a non sequitur. “What? What does that have to do with anything? And, of course I know Harry Potter!”
“Well to quote Sirius Black, ‘Once again you’ve put your keen and penetrating mind to the task and as usual come to the wrong conclusion.’"
The Sheriff starts snickering, and Stiles is both insulted and also a little in love.

“Stiles. Thank you for coming. I have something I would like to discuss with you.”
Of course you do, Stiles thought. Why else would you call me here? “Does it perhaps have anything to do with that letter?” Now that his king father had moved closer, Stiles could see the sigil on it. It was a small trout, from one of their fishing villages along the west. Jade Cove or maybe Jade Bay. He could never recall all their names, or the lords who ruled over them, especially since almost all had decided to name their lands after the Jade Sea next to them. So many Jades and even a man as well informed as Stiles could get lost.
The king looked down at the parchment in his hand before blinking a few times. “No, not this letter.” He strode over to his desk and shifted around the scrolls for a few minutes. “This is the one I wanted to discuss with you.”
Stiles liked the sigil of that one a lot less. It was a wolf head, tilted up to howl, encased in green wax. The sigil of the Queen of Hale Kingdom. “What counsel could I possibly give between two rulers?” Stiles aimed a joke.
“It’s not your counsel I need,” King Thomas sighed. “It’s your hand.”

“I am a total weirdo,” Derek shrugs, finally meeting his eyes and bookmarking his page.
Derek’s ridiculously glad to see him. A part of him thought he might not show up after Saturday’s debacle.
Stiles’ cheeks are flushed and he’s only wearing a t-shirt, sans his usual plaid over shirt. It’s been hot as hell this summer and Derek can smell clean sweat on him and his hair is a little wild, longer than it was last time he saw him, sticking up in places from the humidity.
Derek tries to scent the air as subtly as he can but Stiles’ eyes darken in response. He smells good.
His warm brown eyes narrow, clever gaze scrutinising Derek and his lips are pursed, but he doesn’t actually look angry anymore.
He looks confused. Exasperated even.
“Correct. You are a weirdo. And I like that about you, for the record. Usually. But Saturday... you were way more weird than normal. What’s going on Derek?” Stiles jabs a finger at him as he toes off his sneakers.
