Summary
The story is the one you know. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are the two best hockey players in the league. On the ice, they’re fierce rivals. Off the ice, they share a bed, share secrets, share their hearts.
But in a world where soulmates exist, where at a young age you form a mental connection with the one who was made for you, what happens when the lines between what’s in your head and what’s in front of you begin to blur? They will be randomly paired with a student at another school in Canada via email. In order to get full credit on the assignment, they must send at least five emails back and forth and gather enough information to write their project.
After seven years, Ilya is pretty sure he's done enough for 100%

“I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”
It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.
“I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”
It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,
“Very funny joke.”
(or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)

Anyway, Shane didn't remember exactly what was in the folder ... But he knew they were all good shots of him.
He hastily clicked open the folder, his eyes barely glancing through the dozen or so shots there, vaguely registering a picture with a sunset background from his condo balcony, something of him laughing, a picture of him working at his laptop with his glasses on...
The director called him again, and he shook his head, the photos blurring. Whatever. It would have to do.
He clicked "select all," then the messages icon, then Rozanov's name. Hit send.
