Summary
To peacefully end the war with Akielos, King Auguste of Vere sold his brother in marriage. To some, that was his first mistake.
As Laurent thrived in Akielos, his brother's rule suffered without him. Now the King of Vere has taken a prolonged Retreat from his duties, leaving the country in the hands of his chosen Regent, his uncle, Richard. In the south, Akielos is at war with her own people, a simple rebellion that should have been quashed in months stretching into years, as if their enemies somehow know their every move before they make it.

Wesninski was standing at the Home court door, impatient and annoyed. His weird blue eyes were the same as the boy's, but they looked every bit as merciless and dead as Riko's father's could be. Another shark, Riko realized, even if his runt of a son was nothing but a dog.
Or-
Mary fails to save her son. Nathaniel grows up in the Nest.
Another attempt to explore the story that could have happened. Tags to be added and adjusted as needed.

Summary
At the battle of Marlas, Auguste brokered peace by promising his brother to Akielos. That was his first mistake.
Auguste is a failure of a King. His brother hates him, his wife is dying, and his guards are turning against him. The only person still on his side is his uncle, Richard of Vere, and Uncle Richard is still recovering from a vicious assassination attempt. Every move Auguste makes seems to be the wrong one. Every time he is sure he is right, the rift between himself and Laurent only stretches farther.
One thing Auguste is sure of: whatever the price, no one will take his brother from him.

Neil doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about sex. Maybe he should.
A missing scene of the type I wish we had seen in the books. Now expanded into more scenes in order to explore a few more things I wanted to look at.

Summary
"You sold me to Akielos."
The battle of Marlas comes to an end fizzling on uncertain terms when the victory Auguste earned fails to prove as decisive as he'd first thought. With his father dead and the crown unexpectedly placed upon his brow, sacrifices must be made for the greater good. Auguste cannot establish his rule and continue this pointless war at the same time - not without a high price in bodies and time and gold. Peace must be established, quickly, and it has to be the kind that lasts. Laurent will understand. Sometimes, duty and honor must take precedence over personal preference.

Summary
The gods always pick two: one to bless, one to curse. It was an accident, discovering how the blessing tempered the curse. It seemed the gods-blessed Aurelis could do anything - from sending their enemies screaming with the mere whisper of his name, to making the cursed crown Prince remember what it feels like to be human. The death of the blessed one would be devastating - soldiers would desert, people would panic. There would be no one left who could control the Prince, allowing him to maintain a freedom no other cursed one has ever been afforded.
Lucky, then, that the tales of Aurelis falling in the field were exaggerated. Lucky that Aurelis was only injured, not killed. There is no telling what extremes the cursed Prince might have gone to, had Aurelis really died.

Summary
"Does it hurt you to think of him hurting your country?" he asked, and he told himself that he was pleased, that he wanted Damen hurt. That is eased his own pain if Damen, too, were forced to suffer.
"You know it does," Damianos answered. He paced like a caged animal, like one of Halvik's chained leopards, full of restrained violence, yet he came no closer. "Are we playing now with the fate of nations?" he demanded. "It won't bring your brother back."
With the Regent in Ios and his Akielon's identity revealed, the war for the throne of Vere is gaining heat. Laurent's plans for his alliance and his trust in his Akielon have both been shaken by his Uncle's machinations, but he is determined that he will continue the fight, no matter how much it hurts. This is an attempt to examine King's Rising from Laurent's POV.

Summary
Chastillon was filled with the ghosts of Laurent's innocence. It didn't matter. He didn't think of it. He was silent as he rode, and his mind was hard at work on other matters. The plans he had so meticulously been making, he now set about tearing apart and rearranging. Now he was contemplating winning.
His path to the border strewn with pitfalls and traps of his uncle's making and haunted with memories of the past, Laurent is forced into relying on the unlikely assistance of his brother's killer. This is an attempt to examine Prince's Gambit from Laurent's POV.

Summary
Laurent had come to Marlas a bright and innocent youth caught up in his brother's excitement, in the romance of battle and the righteousness of their cause. He left the battlefield alone, a stranger to himself, ready to be reshaped into a creature of someone else's design. Time and trauma cut him farther from himself, from the ability to do anything but play the losing game he found himself caught up in.
This is an attempt to examine the first novel from Laurent's POV.

Summary
They say that your life flashes before your eyes in those last crucial moments before you die. That’s the cliché anyway. No one ever mentions waking up from death two years later and having to figure out how to fit your life back into the patterns and cycles that were once so familiar to you. Shepard has new scars and old problems and only one course of action: get to work.
