So when Bella killed him, well. He didn't let her get away with it. A gamble, really, but a gamble which exchanged their life and death.
Which meant he was still here, stuck with an inconvenient ghost, exposed to the wizarding world for what he really was - not a traitor, never, but a dark wizard by birth, yes, and that might prove a problem even if he decided never to use dark magic again - trying to make things easier for Harry, harder for Voldepant's goons, hopefully venting his resentment in useful ways, constructing his family back into something positive this time, saving as many lives as possible. Living, once again.
Of course, the world was ablaze again in the meantime.

Sirius escapes Azkaban in August 1993. He has two goals: 1) Find Harry, 2) Kill Peter Pettigrew.
Sirius turns up at the Dursley's to check on Harry and things do not go as planned... but that's okay because what he finds is better.
"Sirius had been expecting the house to be grey, dark, and stale, but as he crossed the threshold he was hit with the smell of cooking food and the sounds of a warm crackling fire. As he walked through the foyer he found he was in the direct eye-line of a man, a familiar looking man who stood with impeccable posture at the long kitchen table cutting carrots. The man was of average height (slightly taller than Sirius), slim build, and had dark black curly hair that he kept tucked behind one ear. He continued chopping vegetables in tailored black slacks, heavy leather boots, and an expensive looking gray wool sweater. Most curiously about his appearance was the emerald green apron that was fitted around the man's waist that read “World’s Greatest Uncle” in silver lettering. "

Summary
Short pitch: Six children entered the Department of Mysteries. One left it no longer a child. The five others never left at all. A prophecy shattered, a Wizarding Britain without a saviour to turn to and Ginny trying to pick up the pieces.
Longer pitch: a divergence from canon as of the end of OOTP, leaving us with most of the main cast eliminated and Ginny as the new focal point. Needless to say that in this tale, she’ll play a major role as she wrestles with trauma and loss.
Other points of focus will be her fellow students and the Order, who will suddenly need to shoulder a heavier burden with the original main characters gone. Dumbledore in particular finds him robbed of his endgame and now struggles to fight a war without a chosen one. In addition, I try to lend a more menacing quality to Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
That said, this is not an endless tale of misery. There is humour and hope amidst darkness.
