    Summary

Given how and where and when Alastor grew up, he generally doesn't consider himself bad at math. There are all sorts of combinations of sums and division and multiplication he can do without the assistance of an adding machine. He first learned the skill while helping his maman scale up and down amounts in the kitchen. He encountered it again as he started to read music and transpose compositions between different keys for different instruments. Then he honed said skill keeping a close eye on what he should be earning for his hours of work versus what white men tried to pay him, not to mention how tips got allocated out amongst band members. So between cooking and music and money, he’s rather competent day-to-day.

In this particular instance, however, Alastor can admit that he has vastly miscalculated.

    Summary

Lucifer didn't usually take part in Charlie's redemption efforts. It wasn't that he didn't want to encourage her – it was just that being around so many people, especially people who clammed up or freaked out at the sight of him – well, it was a little overwhelming.

Still, after being in the hotel for several months now, he hoped that the residents had at least become used to his existence among them. Like cats who gradually accept the that person feeding them isn't meant to be feared, that they don't need to run and hide under the nearest dresser at the sight of them.

That analogy got away from him.

Anyway, the point was – he didn't often involve himself in the group activities, but this was one Alastor had shown an interest in, and Alastor rarely showed an interest (like, a genuine one) in any of Charlie's redemption plans, and Lucifer simply couldn't resist the glint that had flashed in those crimson eyes when he'd found out what the schedule was to be for today.

Of course – it involved cooking.

    Summary

“Tell me when your birthday is.”

“No,” Alastor answered him, the same answer he'd given every time Lucifer had asked. And he'd asked quite a few times, having found out only recently that Alastor didn't celebrate his birthday.

Look – that as a whole wasn't too unusual for sinners. Celebrating the day you were born – when you were, in fact, as dead as a door-nail – well, it could be a bit of a sore point. And Lucifer wasn't even going to touch on those sinners who celebrated their death days – those guys were on a whole new spectrum of insanity, one he didn't want to go near.

What was weird about Alastor was that nobody even knew when his birthday was.

When one had made a decades long habit of always wearing the same coat (or newer, identical copies when one simply couldn’t be salvaged), it really shouldn’t be a surprise that to be seen without said coat might invite questions.

As though Alastor walking around the hotel in his shirtsleeves was the most interesting thing that had happened since Adam was defeated.

    Summary

Alastor looked around at the actual, genuine darkness, pure night around them, not just the shadows he used or the lack of any light that a fully sealed room brought. The kind of darkness that, after a moment, one realised wasn't actually darkness at all, the pale light from the stars and moon above casting everything in faint, washed out colours.

    The moon.

Oh – he'd not seen it in ninety years, or thereabouts – he'd never noticed how bright it was when he was alive.
