Summary
We knew that summer was over by the first cool breeze that drifted through the air. Chiron had lifted his head towards the west, as if he could see the physical change of the seasons right then and there. What he was searching for, Achilles and I had not the slightest clue.

Summary
Within the whole of the world, there are two truths that must be acknowledged. The first, that when an unlikely account is reported by a third party, one cannot, with good sense, bring any sort of justification in their mind that every word that is spoken is that of truth, or of any consequence.
The second, that when a young, single man of reasonable fortune leaves town, the comfort of his family and friends, and enters the countryside, there is bound to be talk by the families that preside there.

Summary
“So you really think you’ll do it, do you?” His mother asks him.
“What do you mean?”
“With all those space theories. The ones you were talking about back there.”
“Oh,” he says, not quite sure what to say. “I mean, I would like it to.”
“You would?”
Yes, he wants to say. Because the earth is boiling, and the ground is turning into dust, and Bri is sick from it. Everyone is sick from it.

Summary
“Don’t die one me, Pelides,” a voice says, stern and strained. “Don’t you dare, do you hear? Just stay with me, okay?”
He knows that voice.
The light is taken away, and he is met with amber eyes, a worry etched permanently inside them. It is the color he sees when he closes his eyes. It is the color of warmth, of safety. Of home.
How did he get back home?

Summary
“Achilles?” He reaches out to touch his shoulder only to find his skin is far too hot to be considered normal. “It’s me. Are you okay?”
Achilles’ movements are slow as he lifts himself up - also a note of concern, for Achilles was never slow in anything, even if he was incredibly drunk - but when his eyes meet Patroclus’ he seems to freeze.
“Oh,” he mumbles out, like he wasn’t expecting this at all. Then, his mouth curls into a smile. “Hello.”

Summary
“Admiring the view?” Patroclus asks, his voice a warm murmur against Achilles’ skin.
This is not enough to distract him from the sight in front of him, however. No, he thinks, but does not want to voice. Not in the slightest.
“I… was not expecting a mirror to be here,” he says instead.
“Ah, yes, well,” Patroclus says, “I had realized sometime last week that we did not have any at all in the house, and decided to commission one from a merchant from the arena. I thought I might surprise you with it.”
Well, surprised he is, to say the least.

Summary
He undoes the top button, but now that leaves more of his chest on view. His brows furrow, looking at himself.
Would Pat think it’s okay? He did say they were going to a nice restaurant, but Achilles considers most of the restaurants from this time to be nice.
He shifts the collar again, tugging at it, but it does nothing. The collar hangs open, showcasing perhaps just too much skin. Too much for a first date, anyway.
Not that it really feels like a first date - all of these firsts with Patroclus are never firsts for Achilles.

Summary
Then he asks me. “Would you come with me?”
I cannot answer him - the words are stuck in my throat. It topples me over, and I lean towards him, pressing his hands to my skin where we are joined. I press my tears into his skin, soaking his fingers, and sob until I can no longer breathe.

Summary
Achilles’ room is at the far end of the hallway upstairs, and he’d shut the door behind them when they initially entered. Why that was, he couldn’t say. Everything felt a bit more close when they were together like this, like the rest of the world had been shut out. Achilles just wants to be close to him - he always wants to be close to him.
When Thetis walks upstairs, it’s quiet in her son’s room. It’s late, she thinks. He’s probably gone to bed.
She walks right by it without a second thought.

Summary
“You okay?” Patroclus asks him once they’re alone, hands in his pockets, leaning against the wall.
“Yeah,” Achilles forces out, not looking at him. “Just a little… surprised. I didn’t know you guys wanted to, uh, get married.”
Patroclus does look guilty then, and it satisfies a little, but not enough to make it better. “We’d been talking about it. It was mostly her idea.”
As if that could make it better, putting the blame on her. If anything, that makes him feel worse.

Summary
Patroclus, on the other hand, would define himself as a disaster at braiding, but despite all this, Achilles still asked him to braid it for him. Patroclus has yet to discover why, because if he were him, he wouldn’t let him anywhere near his hair.
Especially since Achilles’ hair is so fine - like spun gold. He’d grown out of his natural ringlets at about age twelve, his hair dissolving into waves instead of curls. And now that it was longer, running down past his shoulder blades, it hung down his head like fire in the sunlight. Patroclus was almost afraid he would ruin it if he ever touched it - it was perfect.

“You’ve reached Patroclus Pelides. Sorry, I can’t get to the phone right now, but leave a message at the beep and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!”
Beep!
“Patroclus? Hey, sorry to call, I know you’re on the road right now, but could you call me back as soon as you can? I… I don’t know how close you are to the city yet, but there’s been this huge crash on Highway 5 and just… Just call me back, okay? Please. I love you.”

Summary
“Here,” Achilles says, handing Patroclus’ book back to him. He’s sitting in the seat right behind him today. “Patroclus, right?”
“Yeah,” he says, taking his book back. “It’s Pa-tro-clus, yeah.”
Pa-tro-clus, emphasis on the middle syllable instead of the first. Achilles had said Pat-ro-clus on purpose.
“Right,” he says. “We have a few classes together, I think. Mrs Demeter’s fifth period biology?”
Patroclus is staring at him like a deer caught in the headlights. “Yeah, I think so. Maybe. Can’t remember.”
Achilles gives him a frown, but it’s not really genuine.
“I can’t remember if we share the same class,” Patroclus corrects. “That’s what I meant. I know what classes I have.”
(Achilles is memorable. He’s the kind of guy that lets everyone know when he walks into a room.
So what the fuck does this kid mean he doesn’t remember? Achilles remembers him, so why doesn’t Patroclus remember him in turn?)

Summary
“Where is it I know you from?” he asks.
“We’ve not met before. I would remember someone like you,” Achilles says.
“Would you now?”
“I could never forget.” Their hands are overlapping now, and Achilles feels like they are floating far above the confines of the courtyard. The rest of the partygoers could all be dust and ash, for all he cares. “It feels like my life has just begun after I met you.”
“We only met tonight,” the man says, but he is not backing away - he seems to be even closer than before.
“Is it such a crazy thing to say?”
A moment of consideration. “No,” the man says, quietly, a soft smile on his face. “It’s not.”

Summary
“You look great, philtatos,” Achilles tells him as he turns off the ignition.
Patroclus only frowns at his own reflection, tugging at his hair. “I would if my hair would coopererate. It’s this stupid part right here,” he says, pointing at that one strand that never lies flat. “I’ve put so much gel in it that I’m surprised it hasn’t fallen out yet, and it’s still sticking up.”
Achilles smiles. “It’s cute.”
“Your mom won’t think it’s cute. Just watch, she’s going to think I just rolled out of bed.”
“No she won’t,” - he hopes.

Summary
Let me tell you a story.
It's one of my favourites. A stolen queen. A husband who gathers an army to rescue her from her lecherous captor. A thousand ships from faraway lands all banding together to come to her rescue.
That story is not the one I will tell you now.
No, this story involves two boys.

Summary
The skies are clear tonight, and the moon is dim, so the only light that illuminates the skies were the countless stars of the heavens above them.
“And that one there is Andromeda, do you see?” Patroclus asks, pointing a finger towards the skies above, outlining some sort of shape he sees there.
Achilles hums in affirmation, but he doesn’t really see whatever constellation Patroclus is pointing at. His eyes are fixed on the boy beside him, his features lit up by the dim light of night, painted gorgeous in hues of cobalt and indigo.
