“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”
Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. He didn’t want to feel anything for Alexei, so even if Katia’s death carried a trace of sadness—she was a mess, but she always tried to smile at him and cook warm meals for him when he visited Russia—, he dismissed the feeling entirely.
“So what?”
“You are the only living family member of their daughter. Your brother named you as her legal guardian, Ilya Grigorievich.”

“You see in the past few months there has been an influx of couple trends and like partner tests on TikTok and people do these to test or prove how much their partner loves them or whatever. So,” Nora says with a glint in her eyes, "let's make a bet."

It was a car accident. Most of the damage was to the passenger side, not on the side where Alex was sitting, but he didn’t walk away unscathed. He was transported by ambulance to the closest secure hospital. There is a list of injuries that Cash goes through one by one, his voice calm and clinical as if that might keep Henry from shattering into pieces.
Concussion.
Contusions.
Broken ribs.
Henry knows the words. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he also knows what they mean—that Alex is okay. Injured, yes, but ultimately fine.
But all Henry really hears is hurt.
The love of his life is hurt.
