Rumi leaned in, grabbing Zoey’s arms and pulling them outward into a stretch. Her breath grazed Zoey’s neck, sending a shiver down her spine. “Besides, if someone really is my competition for captain next year… I should keep that person rather…. close. Don’t you think?”
She tugged Zoey’s arms harder, stretching them to their limit. A small grunt escaped Zoey before she could choke it down.
Her pulse pounded like a drumline. Every inch of her body betrayed her, locking up under Rumi’s touch. And Rumi’s eyes—dear Lord—those eyes stayed fixed on hers, sharp and unrelenting, drinking in every twitch and flinch like she was savoring it.

Summary
Laine is a short girl from Argentina that begged her parents to allow her to go to Nevermore. Originally homeschooled, she makes fast friends despite being the youngest in the group. Incredibly shy and unused to the populated school, she struggles to make sense of the dynamic of her friends and the laidback flirting that they all seemed to take part in.
Laine is instantly dubbed, "The baby of the group." Much to her frustration.
She isn't sure how it happened, one day Laine was just enjoying the company of her friends. The next moment she realizes that maybe she felt a lot more strongly about her Vampire friend than she ever thought possible.

“You have to come here right now,” she hissed the second Van picked up.
“Hello to you, too, Nat.” A pause, then: “Why?”
“Jackie is in my apartment.”
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
“Jackie. Jackie Taylor. In my kitchen. Making actual eggs:”
“Like…fried?”
“Like whisked. In a bowl. There’s salt involved, Van.”
There was a pause. Then the dry scrape of Van’s voice: “Yeah. The Jackie that we ate and then shat out is making eggs in your kitchen, sure.”

Or, Nat copes with her trauma through journaling, a suggestion from her mandated therapy. But instead of writing about the wilderness, her thoughts spiral back to Jackie– what could have been if the crash never happened and if Jackie were still alive. It starts as harmless fiction. Healing, even. Until Jackie shows up in her apartment, alive and seemingly pulled straight from the pages Nat had been writing. Inspired by the movie, Ruby Sparks.
