Madeleine has taken to the gift like a duck to water. That's my woman, I knew she would. She likes to learn from me, and I like to teach her. I'm a good teacher, I think. A kind one. We bound about the fields surrounding the cottage, practicing her new vampiric speed, jumping around from tree to tree and rolling over each other like kittens. Every time she closed her eyes, she was plagued with dreams.
Some days she was in Paris. A little bird flapping on stage with a spotlight to track her erratic movement, maximizing the view for an apathetic audience. Achingly often, she was wayfaring with Louis. The ugliest of their arguments, the consuming bitterness between them festering with every step, and most offensively, his hallucinations of Lestat. A continent away, and he still could not let go.
Louis wasn't always thinking of him, but it was such that Claudia would rather not peek into his mind. It was easier to pretend he wasn't riddled with guilt and regret, and that she was exempt from his repressed ire.
On the worst of days, when she opened the coffin lid and the screeching of dozens of rats filled her ears, Claudia would dream of New Orleans.
