Summary
Kyojuro Rengoku was brilliant in every way. He was a warm, caring hand extended in forgiveness even while his comrades condemned Akaza for his sins. It didn't take long before Akaza fell in love with him all over again. How could he resist? Kyojuro's kindness was a balm to Akaza's very soul, and he knew that without it, he'd be lost.
But Akaza would never, ever drag Kyojuro down into this hell with him. He could not tell him that he was Koyuki's next incarnation. He could not tell the Hashira that the people he'd loved and lost were connected in any way at all. As far as they were concerned, Akaza was just a hopeless romantic with terrible luck.
He had to keep his distance. Nothing good ever came out of Akaza being part of his soulmate's life.
If only he could convince himself to stay away.

The girl paled as soon as she opened the dilapidated door, but she steeled herself and guided him inside, and it was then that he saw it, the carnage that was inside of what used to be a quaint little home. Corpses of people strewn about carelessly, their blood seeping through the tatami floor— Mom, Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, Rokuta — seemingly against his will, his knees crumpled down onto the floor, tears filling his eyes as his throat let out the most agonizing sound…

She wondered if she would have to live here forever like the old witches in fairy tales with their gingerbread houses; or if her components would seize, and she'd become a statue for moss and vines to grow on, like the rusted Tin Man. If she felt herself becoming a statue, she would remember to keep her arms out so the birds could perch there. She wondered if anyone would ever find her, silent and covered in moss, a little girl like a tree in the woods.
A silhouette moved in the distance.
It flickered, shifting side to side, appearing and disappearing behind the trees: a dark halting shape in the background of a silent movie.

He notices a gentle crease between Lan Zhan’s eyebrows, at first, before he—and again this is a surprise—opens his mouth to take the bite, lips brushing against Wei Ying’s fingertip. Wei Ying wrenches his hand away, nearly dropping the plate. It’s clearly been too long since he last slept with anyone if he’s having impure thoughts about his coworkers eating food at 3pm on a Wednesday.

His uncle, Lan Qiren, ran their family farm and taught a schoolroom full of children from the nearby village. Lan Zhan and his brother Xichen would help their uncle with the daily chores required to care for the animals and took lessons and studied during the day. Apart from that, Lan Zhan had many pastimes and would often spend his hours practising his guqin, riding his horse or playing with rabbits. Although, what he liked to do, preferred above all else really, was to discipline the farm boy.
The farm boy was more a young man now, but he had been a farm boy when he had come to work for Lan Zhan’s family. He was known as Wuxian, but his birth name was Wei Ying, which was what Lan Zhan called him."
