Nonetheless, a few minutes later, and after a heavy consideration of walking to the nearby bridge and throwing himself off before he has to confront this, he is faced with Wilbur Soot’s contact on his phone.
The picture is what their friends like to call “The Tommy Smile”, and the image helps soothe his frightened brain, even for just one second. If anything, Wilbur was practically his parent. He went to him for everything. And whilst Wilbur’s name had been one of the first things he thought of when he stood up in that park, he was so afraid of the man’s reaction. Would he be upset? Would he yell? Would be so pissed that he would hang up and leave him to fend for himself and then Tommy would die?
He tapped the call button before more filterless horrifying thoughts filled his slow-moving brain. It rang just a few times before he heard the line pick up, and his heart with it.

“You-” He cuts himself off, doubting himself a little bit and furrowing his eyebrows, “Were you not upset back there? When we were leaving, you sounded- and looked upset.”
Wilbur stares at him for a few seconds with his mouth the tiniest bit agape, before speaking, seemingly shocked and confused. “Did you not see what was happening that whole time?”
Tommy was taken aback by this, smiling slightly in his confusion. He just had the most fun he’s had all summer. “What?" He asks, nearly muted by how quietly he muttered it.
Wilbur cuts to the chase like he always did, the bold man. “James was horrible to you.” He stated, sounding very confident in his idea.

"You can open your eyes now, lovebug," Wilbur declared, planting a quick kiss on Tommy's forehead.
"Mm, no," the little whined playfully.
"No?" Wilbur feigned shock.
"'M s'eepy."
"Time for bed?"
Tommy just hummed, letting his arms find their way around his dada's neck and his chin to his shoulder. When he knew Wilbur couldn't see, he opened his eyes, just for the heck of it. He grinned at his silly antics.
"What's so funny, mister?" Wilbur asked, tone alight with his own smile as he rubbed the little's back, "I can feel you grinning back there."
Tommy giggled, tucking his thumb into his mouth on instinct. "Nuffin'."
In which Tommy finally decides to leave his abusive family and goes to stay with his pseudo-brother, Wilbur. Amidst the chaos of his life, Tommy finds calm, and slowly, he learns how he can heal from his past.
