Ivan wasn’t like Urak’s pet. He wasn’t spirited or zesty, crude and snappy but with charms and talents to endear you to him anyway. If it took every good grace he’d earned with Unsha for his years as a lucrative business asset and his wife’s favorite lap pet, it was a cheap price to pay to protect his heart that beat in the chest of the other.

Clervie is back in the House. She shudders, tries to sleep in her borrowed room, tries to sort out of fragmented memories now that she has room to breathe, even if she doesn't dare disturb anything in the room except for the bed. Mother never liked it when they left a mess behind, always holding Clervie to a higher standard because of their blood relation.
But Mother is gone.
Peruere stands in her stead, as Director and a Harbinger both, her old friend so cold and callous that it makes her terrified, even though it is Perrie.
The only thing keeping her from bolting is Peruere's presence and little Freminet; she remembers him, as she remembers every dead sibling, and she'd not thought he'd still be alive to this day.--
Freminet, overseeing a simple tracking mission, finds far more than he could've ever expected: a ghost from the Hearth's past, long presumed dead. Clervie’s return reopens old wounds and strains loyalties -- a dangerous thing, when tensions are high in the House, following a recent attempt at burning their home down.

The nametag read Gaming, and for a moment, Freminet wondered about the story behind such an unusual name. He shook his head and pushed the thoughts aside. He wasn’t here to daydream; he had a task to finish.
“Oh, I didn’t see you there… is this all?” Gaming asked, his voice warm, tinged with a casual friendliness that seemed out of place in the hard-edged world Freminet was so used to.
“Yeah, that’s all…” Freminet responded, his voice softer than he intended, eyes darting briefly to the list in his hand. He slid it back into his pocket, fingers brushing against the cool edge of the paper.
“It’s $16.78,” Gaming said, eyes crinkling into a smile. “Though you look cute, so I’ll make it $10.50.”
