Summary
Their plates are almost completely clean, but Chris gives in. He clears his throat and softly says, “why do you think people cut themselves?”
Buck almost spits out an ice cube he was chewing on. Whatever he thought was up with Chris was definitely not that. He is hoping, praying, even, to Gods he doesn’t believe in that Chris is not thinking about hurting himself. He’s a baby, is the thing. Sure, fourteen isn’t technically a baby. But he’s still a baby!
or, chris brings up self-harm and buck has a totally normal reaction

Summary
One time last year, Julie at school asked him why he looked so tired, and Chris was too tired to think about it, so he just told the truth, just said “I had a dream about my mom last night.”
And Julie sort of ducked her head, a little awkward and then hopeful, like maybe it was something they had in common, “I dream about my cousin who died a few years ago sometimes. It’s like we’re still hanging out, like she’s not dead for a minute. It’s kind of nice, right?”
“Right,” said Chris, but it was a lie. In Chris’s dreams, Mom is always dying.
Or, Chris does the Kim plot instead of Eddie.

Summary
Buck’s hair is gray at the temples, buzzed neatly on the sides and a bit longer and curlier on top than Chris remembers him wearing it, and there’s a new scar through one of his eyebrows. He looks good, like he’s living a happy life, and the only possible reason Chris can imagine for Buck to be here at Helena Diaz’s funeral in El Paso is that Chris’s father brought him.
“Why would you come?” Chris snaps at him.
Buck blinks. “Why wouldn’t I come?”
“She didn’t mean anything to you.”
“I’m not here for her,” Buck scoffs. “She is dead. I’m here for him.”
or
Chris is forced to grapple with the choice he made eleven years ago when his father comes back for Helena’s funeral.
