“I…seem to have developed a taste for it, yes.”
Owen barks out a laugh. “Your survival instincts are terrible, doctor.”
“I have been trying to set this feeling aside,” Legs confesses. “It’s unhelpful, but persistent. I didn’t realize you’d be able to pick up on it.”
Owen can’t help himself. He stands directly over Legs, undoing the top two buttons of his shirt and pulling the collar aside. Usually he affords the doctor the courtesy of doing so himself, but this time he wants to test a theory. Sure enough, Legs’ pulse spikes. “If I fed from you right now, would you enjoy it?”
He says, voice just slightly strained, “I think you know the answer.”

There are plenty parts of his sudden survival out of the castle that are almost completely new to him! And in a world and a society so unkind to inexperience and innocence, it's a good idea for him to ask somebody he trusts to introduce him to the darker parts of this world.
What isn't a good idea, Arthur knows, is trusting him.

Right after Boiling Rock, Zuko found Sokka sprawled in his tent with a bouquet of red roses, and a ring of romantic candles, and one final rose set between his teeth. With the littlest twinge of envy, Zuko realized the entire display was for Suki.
The point is Sokka's flirting is about as subtle as a buffalo yak. To miss it, you’d have to be a complete and utter airhead.

Summary
Zuko was probably more involved in the gossip around the palace than he had any right to be.
It’s not his fault, it’s really not. It’s just that sometimes he’s sitting in the kitchens (the best place to get the gossip) drinking tea and trying to relax for once, and some of the kitchen staff will start gossiping where he can still hear them. He doesn’t really try to listen in; it’s not his place and he won’t judge the staff based on whatever rumors are running around, but Spirits is it interesting. He tries not to listen too much, or get too invested in it though. Gossip is gossip after all, and rumors hardly ever turn out to be true.
But Zuko absolutely needs to know if Maya from the laundry room broke up with her piece of shit boyfriend.
Or, 5 times Zuko got invested in/meddled in palace gossip, and 1 time he was the subject of the gossip.

The information hits Tide like a sledgehammer to a chipboard wall- he knows now he never stood a chance. He tries to tell himself that Wavelength is the worst kind of man, selfish and uncaring, but all he can think of is the fact that Wavelength chose- is still choosing- to let Tide live every time, choosing Tide over himself.
“Do you?” Tide asks, voice shaky.
“Do I what?” Wavelength spits, modulator and mask unable to hide the tremor in his voice.
“Hate me.”
OR
Mark and Tide make out in an alleyway (I recommend reading A False Start before this, it's not 100% necessary though).

It takes Janus fifteen years to figure out that empathy and virtue signaling are not synonymous, and three more to understand how it supposedly works.
It's not exactly a revelation, and it doesn't change anything in his life to come to the realization that many (most?) people see themselves in others in a more literal manner than he's ever been capable of. He even finds it in himself to muse about the idiocy of the people around him who assume all other human beings work the way they do – but, having said that, he doesn't do much more with that idea than to shrug it off and move on to whatever thought comes next.
Or, Janus has one fear, and it's losing control.

Virgil is always nervous when he’s around Janus. Nervous and scared and anxious and he’s not sure what the butterflies in his stomach really mean anymore but it’s just as addictive as Janus’ stupid fucking smoking habit. Janus looks at him like he’s a stray cat with a funny face and Virgil shakes and blushes and swoons at him like a teenage girl. Remus mocks him for it constantly, but Remus doesn’t look like an angel flying down to Earth just to make fun of him and he also doesn’t pet his hair as he does it, so, expectedly, Virgil cares very little.
Or, Janus is scared of losing control, and Virgil will gladly let Janus control him, instead.
