How Roman consistently gets to Gerri’s phone before she does, she’ll never understand. He’s become her personal messenger service, announcing incoming calls and texts which she sometimes thinks is a dig at her age—implying she can’t see very well, hear very well, or both—and other times just his latest attempt at finding another way to simultaneously annoy and charm her all in one go.
“I’ll take that,” she swipes the phone from his open palm, ignoring the questioning look in his eyes as she heads toward the stairs. Who’s Kathy? Wouldn’t he like to know.
It isn’t every day that Gerri receives a call from one of her sisters. Isn’t even every week, or every month. Someone would have to be dying or dead for Deborah to reach out to her.

Things are not really all that great in the world of the Roy family. First you have Kendall deciding to betray his father instead of taking the blame for the cruise fiasco. Then you have Shiv and Tom, who can barely stand being in the same room since she sold him out as a good candidate for prison. Meanwhile, Logan forced himself to step aside and gave the job of temporary CEO to Gerri and is reeling from being betrayed and insists on his family acting like they are tight as ever.
The only good thing is the secret relationship Roman and Gerri have developed in the middle of all the nonsense. That is until Roman suddenly doesn't show up to a party his dad is throwing. His sudden disappearance throws everything out of order and forces the Roy Siblings to work together to try to figure what happened to their brother while Gerri is left with a choice of either keeping her relationship a secret to keep her job with Logan or reveal everything to the siblings to help save Roman.

Summary
There's a noise ricocheting around Roman and it's familiar. He knows what it is even if he can't put his finger on it just yet. Opening his eyes to investigate seems unwise at the moment. Whatever the source of the noise, he is comfortable and isn't inclined to move. Darkness and stillness surround him. He is lying on his back on a cushioned surface, at rest in a space that both is and is not. The beeping is but a gentle rhythm to lull him farther into the ether, or perhaps is a signal to return him from the impenetrable blackness. It's impossible to determine which way is correct, so he doesn't. He hovers in a suspended fog, weightless, unburdened.
A hushed voice sails along the waves of beeping, a message in a bottle bobbing in vain that its intended recipient will someday receive its pleas. The fog distorts to allow him to listen, the opacity rippling with a slingshot of worry. "Come back to me. I need you to come back to me, Roman. It can't end like this."
Broken down by the cataclysmic events of his father's funeral, Roman wakes in the hospital without any memory of the trauma he's endured but with the sense that who he was before, he doesn't want to continue being.

Gerri was going to hate him.
That’s the first thought that runs through Roman’s head as his body hits the tarmac. Gerri already hates him. She’ll hate him even more now. He can practically hear her voice ringing through his head, momentarily masking the throbbing sensation in his forehead.
The second thought he has is that his body has just been hit by 2,930kg of Mercedes-Benz metal. That was going to leave a bruise.

It’s 2:13am when Gerri’s phone rings on the bedside table of her hotel room. She momentarily considers throwing it across the room. Technically she no longer works for Waystar Royco, even though she’s confident Roman wouldn’t have bothered with the paperwork. Her resignation letter is sitting in the drafts of her inbox, ready to go at 9 am tomorrow morning.
She was done. Out. Off the team.
The phone keeps ringing. A fourth ring. A fifth. A sixth. Until her hand shoots out from under the duvet and she instinctively answers it without looking at the caller ID.
Somebody better be fucking dying.
