Perhaps not. But Dottore can see the hunger enclosed in Pantalone’s eyes. Endless and insatiable, it devours the violet of his irises, swelling out from the yawning maws of ink-dark pupils.

“Isn’t it?” Phainon whispers, but his brow gentles, posture relaxing into the chilly night's air. “And what is it you desire, Anaxa?”
A touch, as the baby dromas snuggles close, and for one fleeting moment, an image crosses his thoughts. Watching the sunset, satisfied from a day fulfilled by the gentle touch of companionship and a homecooked meal. They'd have a home, together.
“Peace,” Anaxa says eventually. “I, too, desire peace.”
Anaxagoras has fifteen days left to alter the course of Amphoreus' history for good, and he's resigned every hour to it wreathed in the slow and agonizing deterioration of a body that is already dead. The plan was to spend the brunt of it alone, in the solitary halls of his quarters.
The plan did not include Phainon, who shows up at his door in the middle of the night, asking for a place to stay.

“You can say no,” Kaveh begins. Heat crawls up his neck, turning his skin pink. He’s practiced this question dozens of times in the mirror, plotting out all sorts of ways this conversation might go, arguing with the Alhaitham in his head that often rears its not-so-ugly head right when Kaveh is about to make an ill-advised decision. But now, when faced with the real thing, Kaveh suddenly feels self-conscious.
Alhaitham’s thumbs dig into the sensitive sharpness of Kaveh’s hipbones, drawing soothing circles there that Kaveh uses to ground himself.
Right. It’s just a question. Just a simple, easy question. All Kaveh has to do is open his mouth and say–
“I want you to be mean to me.”
– anything but that.
Alhaitham blinks. Opens his mouth. Closes it again. Then, eloquently–
“What?”

“He’s not a friend.” Haitham snaps, sharper than Kaveh expected him to be. When he tips his head up to glance over his junior’s face the bigger man has a dark, strained expression. “I’m his partner.”

This was so stupid. Really.
Alhaitham and Kaveh have always been a collision of contradictions—a living paradox of fire meeting ice, passion clashing with logic. Kaveh knew from the start that dating him would be less a romance and more a demolition project.
So what if seeing him with her felt like a dagger to Kaveh’s chest?
So what if every barbed word between them now tastes like a lie?Please. It really wasn't that dense.
Alhaitham was just his insufferable lover. Kaveh’s maddeningly composed, unfairly beautiful human enigma. It was supposed to be as simple as that, but when a glimpse of Alhaitham’s rare smile—directed at someone else—shatters his fragile resolve, he does what he does best: drown the evidence in wine and sculpt his panic into petty defiance.
Because he really was that type of stupid.
