    Summary

The third question is asked by a reporter who pretends very hard that she’s not smiling.
“So,” she says, tilting her microphone just slightly, “can you explain why you were seen picking up Hayden Pike’s children the other day?”
There it is. Ilya blinks once, slow, thoughtful. Then he shrugs. “Can I explain?” he repeats. “Yes.”
    She perks up.
    “Will I?” he continues. “No.”

Across the country, Hayden Pike is doing the exact same dance under a very different set of lights.
“Hayden,” a reporter says, “people are wondering why Ilya Rozanov was the one to pick up your kids.”
Hayden exhales slowly. “Well,” he says, dry as dust, “there wasn’t a single nanny available. Not one. City-wide shortage.”

or, Shane and Ilya had to look after Hayden's kids and Ilya picks them up from school, the public reacts, everybody is confused.

Several years into Rozanov’s career, ESPN hires a reporter fluent in Russian.

Suddenly able to answer questions fluently and with a wide vocabulary, Rozanov’s interviews go viral. Hockey fans around the world get a new look at what they thought about Boston’s #81. This changes not only his public persona, but his whole life.

Inspired by the look on NBA star Nikola Jokić’s face when he was asked a question in his native Serbian and my own struggles learning a new language.

    Summary

Someone asked Rozanov a question that June missed because of her wandering eye. She chastized herself. What was the point of a journalist who didn't actually take note of what was being said?

"Our strategy has been to focus on fundamentals. Without Hollander on the second line, it—oh, hi, Sonya."

June's ears perked up. Sonya? Rozanov leaned down behind the table as if he'd dropped something, and when he came back up, it was with a little girl June recognized as Sofia Hollander-Rozanov. Rozanov got her settled in his lap, kissed her cheek, and looked out to the room.

June's a small-time sports journalist at a small-time publication, frustrated with what she's assigned to cover. She's expecting another dry post-game press conference from Ilya Rozanov... and then something unexpected happens.

She hauls him back to his place – a gorgeous condo that overlooks Montreal and is 70% glass. All the reflecting, soft light makes her dress look like liquid silver. She lets it drop onto the stairs behind her.

    As she turns—

She sees his reflection. She sees the face she knows she was never, ever meant to see. His heart isn’t in this. But then he’s glancing up at her, some stranger to a smile on his face, and she knows something she was never, ever meant to know: he will make himself go through with this. He’s going to come up the stairs—he’s already coming up the stairs.

    Fuck. She misread this entirely.
