Since they got back from Port Townsend, Charles has noticed that Edwin has been locking one of his desk drawers. Probably to keep the new members of the agency from snooping around in it. He hasn’t asked. Until the day he accidentally discovers that the drawer contains letters addressed to him, all the words of love that Edwin refuses to tell him directly.
Or: it would be much easier for Charles to figure out his feelings if Edwin gave him a little more information about his own.

Et il se souviens bien que Renard ne le vois pas comme ça, alors il a juste à ne plus y penser. Il est la machine la plus sophistiqué du monde, ce ne devrait pas être compliqué.

Playing on Eastfield Community's Sixth Form Rugby team meant Charles, and his teammates, regularly practiced with and competed against local private boys school: St Hilarion's.

Charles gave him a bright grin. “You think I’m charming?”
Edwin ignored him. “And I will act all smitten with you. When they offer you the money to break up with me – and rest assured, throwing money at problems is their only way of handling anything – you will take it. I shall be horribly heartbroken to make them feel guilty and any subsequent romantic partner who is a bit more... mellow than you will be quite welcome.”
Charles stared at him, unsure of how he could’ve ever thought of Edwin Payne as innocent. “Damn... you are a conniving little bastard, aren’t you?”-
Charles Rowland's first impression of Edwin Payne can be summerized as privileged, rich and aloof – also incredibly pretty, but that’s besides the point. However, when Edwin presents him with a scheme to piss off his conservative parents and get some money out of them in the process, Charles can’t resist the siren call of causing mayham for some Tories.

June 16th 2007.
Edwin doesn’t think about the Blitz, and the way you could hear the bombs falling, even deep underground in the depths of the Athenaeum. He always harboured a particular dislike for the doodlebugs, and the ponderous tick-tick-tick of them as they made their way to their final destination. The way the ticking would stop, and the moment of silence as the bomb fell, before the explosion.
Charles’ mouth drops open on a gasp, the call of the magic possessing Edwin finding its answer. Edwin can feel it rising up through his feet, through his whole body, like a tidal wave.
Just before it closes over his head, he says, “Charles—”
Tick-tick-tick-tick. Boom.

Office hours: 11:30pm – 5:30am, Mondays only.It’s the weirdest bloody job interview Charles has ever done.
