As if -he-, who had run away from Berk, had any kind of moral ground to comment on her behavior as an heir.

Hiccup never wanted the chieftainship and always had a thirst for knowledge. Toothless gave him wings to achieve everything he had always wanted. When he fled Berk, he never imagined he would end up involved in a war of hunters, and that this war would bring him back to Berk more than five years later.
Not as Hiccup, but as the living legend of the Dragon Master, the one responsible for putting an end to the attacks on the islands of the archipelago.

Astrid is both excited and worried about the mission she is about to go on with her old friends. They are being given the mission of a lifetime: they are tasked with finding and capturing the infamous Draugr that has been ransacking and destroying villages alongside his army of dragons. He is their only shot at stopping the raids that are ravaging the archipelago. Maybe along the way, they'll even find the boy who disappeared five years ago and has haunted the Isle of Berk ever since.
Hiccup has lived a lonely and rough life since he ran away from Berk before he was forced to kill a Monstrous Nightmare. Now he lives on his own island, which he's named the Dragon's Edge, and is learning more from the dragons that live there every day as he saves more from dragon hunters. He has always been dealing with his past in a not-so-moral way. His childhood of mistreatment and bullying broke him. Alongside a short imprisonment by dragon hunters, Hiccup has long since lost his sympathy for the archipelago and its Vikings. He almost finds the name they have given him ironic. Draugr. The undead warriors of Norse Mythology. He might as well be dead to them.

"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."
Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.
