And despite that... Kaveh is… “Lovesick?”

Kaveh’s hands move to cover his face, palms muffling his words as he mutters, “It’s—not quite like that.”

“Well, the ‘sick’ aspect is accurate, at least.”

“No shit,” Kaveh snorts. “The ‘love’ component, though—it’s, uh—”

    “You’re not in love?”

He coughs. “The greenhouse in my lungs begs to differ. I—it’s more that my body is mourning a love it knows can’t ever be requited.”

For all the negative feelings Alhaitham’s encountered over the past twelve hours, the sensation that creeps through him now is…

    Unfamiliar.

    Unknowable.

Despite all the languages he’s fluent in, Alhaitham is unable to conjure a word or phrase with which he can immediately label it. He just knows that whatever this feeling is, it’s unbelievably unpleasant. Like his body is stationary, yet his internal organs are plummeting into the Abyss.

“You love someone who doesn’t love you back?” he asks after a moment.

Kaveh has Hanahaki. That much is known. But who he loves, and whether Alhaitham will be able to save him, is up in the air.

    Summary

After an argument with Kaveh, Alhaitham wakes up and finds himself in a universe similar to his own, except for one detail: his and Kaveh’s places in life here have been swapped. He is now the Master Architect, while Kaveh became the Grand Scribe. He has a week to realize what went wrong and to go back to his universe.

“Oh for the love of Archons,” Kaveh hissed in response. “Shoo! Don’t bring your self-centered attitude into my line of work. Individualism may serve you right in the noble field of architecture, but my work is to help people. Don’t you know kids? She’ll find a way to bypass the Akademiya official procedures; I’m just making sure that if she goes, she gets the same protection and comfort as other students! Why are you so worked up about it? Stop teaching me how to do my damn job!”

“So what you’re saying is you’re going to kiss me and fuck me until all I want to do is stay alive,” Aventurine says after a grueling minute of confusion. “Right. That’s…wow.”

Ratio winces. “Must you be so crude? If you need me to engage in physical activity with you, then yes. But that’s not the main point here. If my presence will heal you, then we must capitalize on this precious opportunity your vacation has given you and make immediate changes to accommodate your needs.”

“...So you are saying you’re going to fuck me senseless—”

“No, you imbecile!” Ratio scowls, eyes narrowing into a glare. “I’m asking you to move in with me!”

“What,” Aventurine says so blandly, so blindly that he chokes on thin air. He stops to pause and breathe, focusing on not dying from lack of oxygen because- “What the fuck?”

Or in which Aventurine is suffering from the side effects of the Nihility and Ratio’s grand solution is to ask the gambler to move in with him. Aventurine has no idea how this thing called domesticity works, but hey, at least they’re working together again.

“Just thought you could use them. It’s cold, doc. Can’t have you freezing out here.”
He took one of Ratio’s hands again, sliding the glove on with surprising care. The fit was perfect, the fabric snug but comfortable. Ratio stared at their joined hands, his chest tightening with an unfamiliar warmth.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Aventurine’s fingers lingered slightly, his touch light but deliberate. When Ratio finally looked up, their eyes met. Aventurine’s gaze held steady, warm and unguarded in a way that made Ratio’s throat tighten. “Thank you,” he managed, his voice quieter than usual.
“Take care of yourself, Ratio,” Aventurine said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Alhaitham pushes past the other and goes to unlock the front door. Kaveh rushes after him.

It's been weeks since his return from the desert, and Alhaitham and his relationship has never been more on a tightrope than it was now.

    "Alhaitham, please. Please just—”

Kaveh doesn't know what he's pleading for. He really doesn't.

or: 5 times Kaveh gets locked out of the house because Alhaitham keeps accidentally taking his key, and one time he realizes it might have not been an accident.
