Summary
Dan Heng swallows. He reaches for the paper bag, opening it with deft fingers, and stares. Inside, there are two croissants, just as warm and delicious as they’d looked behind the display.
Several impulses rise within him – to punch Blade, a little bit. To kiss him, a little bit more. Instead of giving in to any such urges, he seals the bag and places it down on the bench.
“Thank you,” is what he ends up going with, mostly because he’s nothing if not polite, even to people that have attempted manslaughter on him.
Blade shrugs, an elegant motion that Dan Heng can’t help but follow. He looks toward the horizon as he speaks, cup held loosely near his mouth. “You wanted it,” he says. Like it’s that simple.

Every year, Tighnari disappears for two weeks. He doesn't tell anyone where he is going, or why, and whoever dares to ask him about it is silenced with a pointed glare. This year, Cyno runs into him by accident.
Even from the distance Cyno can see the dilation of Tighnari’s pupils, the flush creeping all the way down Tighnari’s neck. Vaguely he registers that Tighnari is not wearing his usual ranger outfit but loose-fitting white robes instead, bound around his waist but slipping off his shoulders, showing more skin than they’re hiding. Tighnari’s hair is matted with sweat, sticking to his skin.

Phainon’s the only one who can see him like this, the only one he trusts to bare his back to - despite falling to his sword, cycle after cycle. He’s unconditionally placed this vulnerability in Phainon’s hands, and Phainon feels weak with the intimacy of it.
He finds himself leaning in, down, brushing his lips against the spot he’s so cruelly pierced countless times before. He feels the breath Mydei draws in surprise, the tensing of muscle under his lips.
“Feeling sentimental?” Mydei growls, voice low. “What are you thinking about now?”
“Nothing,” Phainon says, too-casual, too obvious. So he amends with, “I love you.”

Their eyes catch for a heartbeat and Dan Heng averts his immediately, shifting them to his bare, dirty feet. In the corner of his eyes, the General approaches the display in the middle of the room. The plinth to the left of Dan Heng hosts a casket of gold and the one on the right holds a sword.
“Surely that sword,” he hears someone say.
“Oh, but last time he chose a sword too. He might take that bow there.”
Just as Dan Heng is beginning to feel a modicum of relief in thinking this man must prefer weapons, a shadow falls over him.

After six years of imprisonment, Dan Heng is no longer a stranger to cages. When the general of the conquering nation chooses him as a war prize, he has already resigned himself to a fate of servitude.
