The Eridians have been working on synthesizing different compounds from the plants they found in the Hail Mary. They have made a new version of the edible Taumeba with some of these compounds inside to hopefully improve Grace's nutrition and the flavor of his staple food. There's no way this can go wrong, especially when the plants they used are labeled as edible.

The lives of the crew of the Long Shot are statistically ridiculous. They've travelled over sixteen light-years to answer a three-decade-old distress call from a dying planet. They expected to find any number of things upon arrival at 40 Eridani, but being greeted by a human voice certainly wasn't on the list.
Dr Ryland Grace says they're welcome. He says the problem has already been solved, and everything's fine, and so, in fact, is Earth. But all they know about Ryland Grace is that he left on a suicide mission ten years before they launched. And they're not so sure they should be taking a dead man at face value.
OR: The Eridians have learned to safely host a human, despite every barrier of language and instinct. Now they just need to do it with seven more. At least, this time, they have Grace's help, right?

Between a forceful medically induced coma, the incident above the planet Adrian, and the close call with starvation on the way to Erid, Grace by every right should not have made it. He chalked it up to being bad at most things, including dying, somehow.

Or, after the beetles make their way back to Earth, Olivia is quick to jump on the first ever mission to Erid to meet their interstellar neighbors. After all, if her middle school teacher could take a trip to space, why couldn't she?
And maybe, she might understand what it was that made him leave without so much as a goodbye to her and his other students.

"Come on Carl, just one thing! Lokken just got her future memories! Why can't I just know one little thing." Ryland was not above whining to get what he wanted. Everyone kept acting weird once they got the time travel memories! The only explanation was that it had to do with the Hail Mary. He wanted to know why.
"You know the project is going to succeed. Is that not enough." Carl, the traitor, raised an eyebrow like he wasn't affected by Ryland's pleas.
"Ok but what do they find? What are the astronauts going to find up there that we can't replicate?" Ryland asked for the umpteenth time. They were all so tight lipped about it! If they already had the answer why don't they just implement it now, why wait almost thirty years?
Carl just laughed, again, like he always did. "You know, you'd already know that if you remembered it," he teased.
Ryland huffed. Fine then! "When I get my own time-travel memories I wont tell you everything I know, see how you like it!"
Weirdly - It was never anything normal with these people! - Carl just smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I can't wait."
OR
The Petrova Task Force travel back in time one after the other. They forgot to invite Ryland.

There was this odd book that Grace had found on his bookshelf one morning.
And despite knowing how to read modern day Eridian language, the cover confused him. So who does he ask for help? His two mates that have been with him for 7 years till this point!Spoiler alert, this book tells of an old Tradition that Eridian mate pairings took part in. Though, from its rather savage ways, it had been changed and rewritten dozens of times. Grace however, would like to give this Tradition a shot.
He was a Scientist after all, he was eager to learn why such things were banned in the first place!

“Then why?”
He can't articulate an answer.
Grace struggles to make peace with his past and cannot find it in himself to be the savior that the universe needs.
