He does everything in his power to hide his Manhattan accent, to disguise the fact that the East still fit over his shoulders like a well-worn coat and the West fit him like a pair of boots that were too small.
At twenty-two Jack runs a strike into the ground and has his face plastered on every street corner of Santa Fe. Now he’s all out of land to run west to. The dream is dried up.
In the summer of 1904 Jack Kelly goes home.

Steve threw the blankets off and stumbled to his feet, racing downstairs as fast as he could go without tripping over his own feet to the front door. He cursed under his breath at whoever was bothering him, ready to give the person there a piece of his mind. Steve flung the door open, but stopped, mouth agape as he took in the sight before him.
