Lex has been watching Alice from a distance since they were kids, thinking she had the perfect life. Now Alice is dead- drowned suspiciously in the lake- and Lex is facing a world without her in it. Not that she doesn't have enough to worry about- work, her mom, her sister, Ethan. And then one day she comes home to find Alice on her front step, dripping lake water and reaching out for her help. Soon, Lex find herself embroiled in more than a murder mystery- there are things in the woods she can't explain, FBI agents asking questions nobody can answer, and, perhaps most importantly, a dead girl at her window, begging her for more than investigative footwork. Facing questions from her heart and the police alike, Lex is forced to reckon with the fact that maybe Alice’s life wasn’t perfect after all. -

“I’m not used to this,” Xid said quietly, dragging the heel of her boot over the ground. She felt out of place, here, in the quiet. In the dark. Every inch of her itched for a stage, a mask to hide behind, strings to strum and lights to blind her.
But the woods were peaceful where Saffron was. Xid could hear the wind wail through the trees, could hear the leaves rustle and the branches collide. Somewhere, nightingales sang, bats swept, owls hunted. She could hear dogs howling into the night back in town, lonesome and hungry. She felt like that, too, starved for anything genuine but straining still back at everything she’d run from.

The streets of Kabuki never truly slept, but they felt more alive in the dark. Looking at all the old familiar faces around her, V took a deep breath of garbage-scented air.
