Summary
Steve had gone fully red-faced with pedantic altar-boy fury. “Did your computer forget how to Google translate?” he bellowed, sticking his head up and over. Bucky yanked him down again. “What are you even trying to say?”
Bucky tried to shake the sparkles off the grenade he had been planning on lobbing over the divider. “It sounded like Latin to me,” he said reasonably, pursing his lips and frowning at the explosive. It dripped a sparkle, and a puff of purple smoke curled up where it hit the concrete.
“That’s because you spent Sunday school flirting with Sarah Cunningham,” Steve accused, bobbing back up to throw his shield and ducking back down to dodge a shining ball of blue light. “You wouldn’t know Latin if it came up and kissed you on your ugly mug.”
“I’d sure know it if Sarah Cunningham did, though.” Bucky grinned, struck by the memory. “That gal really knew what she was doing.”

Summary
“I’m pregnant,” Bucky says, and the first feeling that Steve experiences is relief.
Granted, that might sound surprising, but Steve knows what day it is, and this -- Bucky, with his hair a tangled, sweaty mess, leaning against the doorframe, with a big, brown envelope in his hand and his face carefully blank and neutral -- at last explains the horrible week and clears Steve’s mind from his fears and worries.
“Oh, good,” Steve says and sits down at the kitchen table.
Nothing is wrong with Bucky, after all. The sleepless nights, the haunted look that has been shadowing his face for days, everything must have been just set up for the prank.
This is by far stranger prank than any of those Bucky used to pull, but at the same time, it’s not that surprising. His sense of humor has become understandably a lot more twisted after the Hydra years.
“Good?” Bucky says. “What the fuck, Steve?”
“I mean, uh. Wow! Surprising. How did that happen?”

It didn’t go off, at least not in the way he’d been expecting. It’s chin started trembling, and he could hear a wail building up in it’s tiny body at the novel sensation of being handled by a stranger in red, white, and blue. Before it could cry out, however, the chilly business end of a gun was levelled at the back of Steve’s head.

And maybe that’s what they’re running from. Those ghosts. That minefield. The suffocating pressure to live up to who they used to be when who they used to be has now become stale, recycled words in textbooks and museums and clickbait online articles. Captain America and Bucky Barnes may be American heroes, relics of a time when patriotism ran deep and values were wholesome, but they are also people who lived and breathed and died to live and breathe again.
They fuck off to the coast, trying to put as many miles between them and D.C. as possible. New York is loud and claustrophobic at the best of times, but California has the open skies and roads that make Steve ease a little more into his skin.
