Just as the words left her mouth, two other people walked onto the stage, and the crowd burst into applause. She had been completely drowned out.
Her anger turned to embarrassment as she saw Joel standing up there. What was he doing? He was interrupting the band.
But when she saw the drummer stand from his seat to hand Joel his guitar, she realized he was the band.
Joel was the band. Holy shit, was this actually happening?
(Joel's been disappearing on Wednesday nights. After snooping, Ellie thinks it's because Joel's been seeing Esther, the librarian. But she doesn't know that he's actually been at band practice for the fall dance.)

Joel can't undo what happened, but he can help her heal.
When he suggests they head back to Jackson, she agrees.
The cycle repeats ten times. Her silence. His rambling. More silence, when he runs out of things to say and his stitches rub his skin raw. Encouraging her to eat food she can't even look at. Sleeping within arm's reach. Waking up a few hours later to screams caused by a nightmare she won't breathe a word about.
He doesn't tell her he's getting weaker. He blames his stumbles on invisible branches and his pained grunts on his aching knees and the snow.
He stops asking why she's so quiet, and she never mentions his side. They return to the same stilted, one-sided conversations from when they first met, their roles reversed.
When he hears the hooves five miles outside Jackson, he nearly collapses on the spot.
By some miracle, he makes it all the way to the fence before he does.
OR
Making it back to Jackson doesn't promise Joel and Ellie safety. But it does offer them one thing the open road didn't: a home.

Joel looks up as Tommy steps back up to his side, the cuffs of his shirt wet with blood. Joel glances back to see Maria laid out on the bed, Isaiah’s baby blanket knotted tightly around her head. A dark patch of blood is already spreading on the light blue fabric.
As Ellie reloads and aims out the window, her jaw clenched, Joel’s gaze meets his brother’s. Tommy’s dark eyes, normally so full of laughter, are grave, fear tracing itself across the tense line of his brow. They stare at each other for a long moment, grim resignation growing in the air between them.
“You got any better ideas?” Joel asks. Tommy’s lips thin, but he shakes his head as he takes his rifle back from Joel.
“None. Get them ready, I’ll cover us,” Tommy says, his voice curt as he turns back to the window and raises his weapon.

Now that Ellie’s alone, she just sits on her bed and looks at her book. She can’t call it reading anymore – by now she has read the thing front to back so many times that she could quote some paragraphs word for word.
That’s why it’s weird that it took her so long to notice the message written on the front page.
There, nestled just below the title, there’s one line of writing addressed to her. It doesn’t mention any names, but it is for her. It can’t be otherwise.
It’s not Tommy’s handwriting, nor Maria's, nor Riley's.But it’s somebody’s. Somebody who knew she’d like to read about Moon landing, spaceships, and astronauts. Somebody who cared enough to take this book, fix the hardcover with some scotch tape, and give it to her. Somebody who wrote those words on the front page knowing that they would make her smile.
Somebody who loved her.
It’s late spring 2024 when Ellie wakes up in Jackson. She has a backpack full of books, a burn on her arm, and no memory of how she went from Boston QZ to Wyoming.

She catches him brushing calloused fingers along the braid and heaving a heavy old man sigh like something in the bracelet has resettled whatever had been out of whack.
