Summary
Virgil was used to being a social pariah his whole life. And he told himself he was okay with it, for his greater purpose to help his sacred community. That was how is was for the firstborn children of his family...though all of them were destined for sacrifice eventually.
Call it tradition or having enough bad luck being born a person scheduled to die. It would almost feel noble and necessary and selfless...despite how he was treated by those he was apparently saving. But Virgil made himself accept it, because he knew no other choice.
His only two friends would like a word about that.

Janus should've ignored him. All he'd wanted was to steal a jar of Logan's Crofters, leaving Logan to play detective the next morning and incorrectly deduce the culprit as Roman.
Yet it had been three days since Patton emerged from his room and it was his responsibility to care for these such things. It has been his responsibility ever since he squeezed a young Patton's hand in comfort and confidently declared, "No need to worry about it, Patty. I'll take care of all the bad things to ensure Thomas doesn't have to think about them. That can be my job."

ON INDEFINITE HIATUS
Life's not fair, is it?
Sometimes the bad guys win. Sometimes we're held accountable for things we don't remember doing. Sometimes we're forced to do horrible things in the name of protecting what's good. Morality isn't as easily defined as when we were young.
But through all this darkness, there is hope. Hope that good will win in the end. Hope that life will turn around for the better. Hope that we can be forgiven. Hope that people will band together and ultimately do the right thing.
Until then, we are here, at the Institute of Outstanding Disabilities and Neurological Assessments, where the only thing you have to fear is not dying a peaceful death.
