Summary

Martin's old enough now to have gotten over most of the sexual hangups instilled by his upbringing. He’s an adult with his own flat - a flat where he can watch porn whenever he pleases, thank fucking god - and he wanks as often as any other guy. Maybe more often. Probably more often.
Even so, there are one or two habits that stuck. And sometimes, when he's feeling worked up in a particular way - a particular weird, guilty way - like, say, a “fantasizing about his gorgeous boss who hates his guts” kind of way - well. Sometimes he still likes to do this.

Despite his reluctance, he vows to make this the most comprehensive poetry class he can. His students will EARN their grades, and he will accept nothing less than perfect form! Half rhymes get half marks!
Martin Blackwood is a former employee of a tea shop who adores poetry. After spending several years working part time jobs to support himself and his ailing mother, he has managed to scrap together enough funds and a high school equivalency diploma so that he can take some courses and get a job where he won't have to be on his feet all day. Delighted to have room in his schedule for one elective, he naturally pursues a poetry class. Unfortunately, his new professor hates the subject. And he seems to hate Martin, too.
Then Tim decides to get the whole class to write increasingly sappy love poetry about their professor to hand in as assignments for a prank and despite refusing to take part, somehow this still makes things worse for Martin specifically.

Jon held his breath. The kitten was small enough to fit in Jon’s palm, and it had met him less than a minute before. The kitten didn’t know if Jon meant it harm, it didn’t know any of the things - good and bad and worse - that Jon had done in the last three years, it didn’t know what Jon was, but it trusted him completely. After a moment it curled into a ball in the crook of Jon’s knee, apparently content to fall asleep there and then. Jon hurriedly blinked away the tears that were threatening to spring up into his eyes.
In a world where Jonah Magnus's plan doesn't work, Jon and Martin stay in Scotland and try to live a normal life - or as close to normal as they can, under the circumstances. Their neighbor's cat has kittens.

Summary
The tips of Martin’s fingers are still numb.
Both emotion and bodily sensation have returned in fits and starts since Jon pulled him out of the Lonely. Relief and fear in equal measure as his short nails scrabbled for purchase on the back of Jon’s coat, realising just how deep he’d let himself sink. Maybe too deep to pull back — a thought that crosses his mind every time Jon updates him on the progress of people he should care about more deeply; when an old favourite song plays on Daisy’s radio and doesn’t make him want to dance like it used to; or when Jon shyly presents him with his poetry notebook, salvaged from his old flat, and the passion he used to write with feels alien. When Jon, face filled with concern, pulls his hand from under his scraping nails and Martin realises that itch he’d been absentmindedly scratching is now raw and oozing, speckled with blood. It hurts far less than Jon’s touch does.

Martin understands that Jon's going through a hard time right now - and he's not bothered by the sight of Jon staking out his flat, really, though he's a little embarrassed on Jon's behalf. Still, it's getting cold and Martin hardly wants Jon freezing to death. Maybe if he offers Jon a cup of tea, that'll convince Jon to go on his merry way.
