Summary
Astarion raised one hand to throw his dagger at the man, only for his fingers to spasm. The blade fell from his fingers, clattering to the floor. Both his arms convulsed, and his dirk joined the dagger on the floor. His chest seized, robbing him of breath, and he could only look at the intruder in shock before he collapsed, paralysis taking hold of him.
Slow, heavy footsteps stomped toward him, no longer trying to be quiet. A thick boot nudged him in the ribs. Astarion’s mind whirled, screaming at himself to get up, get away, stab him, bite him, flee, fight, fucking anything! All he managed was a twitch of a finger and nothing more.

Its existence does go quite some way to explaining why Mr Dekarios had, before Astarion laid his reasoning quite so thoroughly at his feet, been so surprised to be refused.
What more could a man want from a marriage than a handsome partner, good fortune, and well-appointed estate?
Other than respect, of course.Yes this is a Pride and Prejudice plus magic fic, in which Gale is Darcy and Astarion is Elizabeth (to begin with). Beginning just after Astarion turns down Gale's proposal.

It wasn't just bad luck that Staeve was targeted. It was a calculated attack. Halsin knew well enough how a caster could examine their enemies for tells. Halsin did it himself. Considered an opponent's tactics, and guessed at the places their mind would be most vulnerable.
You didn't have to be a gifted empath to watch how Staeve hurled himself into the thick of combat, right at the biggest bandit wielding the two-handed great sword, and think that the man might be vulnerable to a spell that exploited wisdom.
The fact that it took down Astarion too, well, perhaps that one was just bad luck.

He focused on his breathing, shallow but warm against his skin, as he made himself watch Astarion as he kept writhing on the bedroll, plagued by invisible touches, crying out from time—it was hard to witness, especially knowing they could do nothing but wait.
