The other Caleb, the one who would never be his, looked pained. “Essek, that’s not the real me. That’s a fiend wearing my face.”
“Is that how little you think of me?” Essek snapped. The other Caleb flinched as if from a physical blow. “I know exactly what he is.” He’s the one who will give me what you never would.
Essek’s Caleb kissed him sweetly on the cheek. It felt like benediction. “Be a dear and get rid of him for me, darling.”

This will be a mid-length multi-chap of a year in the life of wizards in love. I'll promise right now that we're not getting angsty in this. Essek held himself stiffly, his shoulders rising in affront. A dangerous lapse of control, considering the woman standing before him, and one he would berate himself for later in the privacy of his tower, but he couldn’t help it. To be bartered off as—as a diplomatic representative of all things. It was absurd, insulting. Was the prestige his accomplishments brought to the den not enough? The Bright Queen herself had awarded him the title of Shadowhand for the advancements he’d made to the field of dunamancy, advancements that had secured countless victories in the war. Why should he have to upend his entire life to accommodate some human he’d never even met?

If he could scrub it off, he would.
It takes a while for the name to turn up at all, as it often does when one or both souls are not consecuted. That alone is enough to disappoint his parents - even more so when it becomes apparent that he is not a returning soul. By ten, Essek has begun to wonder if he will never have a name at all. By thirty, watching all his peers struck with new distractions, he has begun to hope he won't.
It lasts until he’s nearly ninety. Essek has been convinced for decades that he’s managed to escape the matter altogether; perhaps, he had thought, the lack of interest he has always felt in that direction has spared him from the entire ordeal. But there it is, one morning, engraved across his chest as though it has been there since birth.
