“Ha.” Had he been holding his breath the whole time? The first few huffs of oxygen feel like a luxury earned. “As luck would have it. Looks like you’re safe now, friend.”
Sheathing his dagger, he pulls open the cage door. The bird doesn’t move. It just blinks owlishly up at him, feathers standing on end, its eyes far too lucid for something seemingly on death’s edge. Heavens, Kakavasha might be inclined to go as far as to say this owl is judging him. Which is— well, it’s not the kind of gratitude he’d usually hope for. Though, an argument could be made that Kakavasha is the one talking to a bird.
When Kakavasha rescues a wounded owl from the ruins of a fallen sorcerer’s tower, he doesn’t expect the creature to be a cursed familiar — or to fall in love.

"Few people know how to truly relax," Ratio says, perched on the edge of Aventurine's desk. It makes his thighs double in size. Aventurine's thoughts begin to scatter. "Relaxation is a process. As such, naturally there are practical, step-by-step instructions to achieve it.”
"Right," he says, forcing his gaze away. "My, doctor, could one take a guess and assume that some of the relaxation you're referring to is of the more…” He flicks his fingers. “Intimate kind?”
Something curious happens: Ratio stalls. He averts his gaze as his cheeks dust over with pink.
He recovers quickly, however, coughing into his palm and resuming right where he left off. “It would be inane to exclude the potential of intimacy.”
Aventurine is stressed. The knowledgeable Dr. Ratio offers an expert, thorough, only slightly self-indulgent solution.

The words made the growing flame in Aventurine’s heart burn a little brighter. What had started out as barely smoldering coals was quickly becoming something he had trouble keeping under control. “Careful. If you keep talking like that, I’ll start to think you’re worried about me.”
For a moment, Ratio was silent. He could feel Aventurine’s expectant gaze on him, waiting for a response. “I had thought that was obvious,” he said quietly.
Two lonely men with vast differences take a chance to reach out to one another, and find something far more powerful than their pain.

“Fine,” Aventurine interjects, effectively pausing the doctor’s tirade. “Then don’t. But you should know that the duck will be saddened by your rejection.” He throws Ratio a knowing glance. “As will I.”
Ratio exhales a weary breath, lifting a hand to signal a pause. He takes a moment to steady himself before coming to a decision.
“You are unbelievable,” he mutters beneath his breath. “Fine. I will try the damned thing.”
Following their tribulations in Penacony, Aventurine and Ratio receive an unexpected gift from Jade—a much-needed vacation at at the most exclusive resort in the cosmos.
With only each other, the sun, and the beach for company, it's a stark contrast to their everyday lives. As they struggle with the complicated shift in their relationship, a disappearance at the hotel, and the constant battle to keep their emotions in check, it all threatens to unravel completely.

His move into a luxury apartment building brings him next door to Ratio, an esteemed classical composer with a love for piano. Eager to make a good impression, Aventurine keeps his clubbing habit under wraps — but he’s not the only one hiding secrets under strobe lights.
