He's mastered this additional sense of his, so it doesn't hurt him to be on Earth, a planet capable of harnessing electricity in all their structures. He uses this sense to remain vigilant of his surroundings. He uses it to know when a storm is coming. He uses it to find objects with traces of electricity.
Sonic, Tails, and Maddie learn firsthand how helpful this tool can be.

The Wachowski's are waiting in the hospital for Tom to get discharged. It is a stressful time for all of them. It gets a little more stressful for Tails when Maddie begs him to merely hold Sonic's paw while she's away answering the doctor's questions. Tails agrees, and he finds himself holding onto a weirdly panicked Sonic.
After Sonic disappears into the bathroom for too long, Knuckles volunteers to check on him. He knows something is wrong the moment he smells blood.

Maddie sometimes forgets that on top of being her son and an alien, Sonic is a hedgehog. He exhibits traits related to his Earthly counterpart. These traits can be harmless like belly rubs or purring.
They can also be damaging, as Maddie discovers after Tails and Knuckles getting sick causes Sonic so much stress that he reverts to older habits.

So why, Sonic wondered, did the thought keep coming back to haunt him? Was it because of all the subtle "parental" quirks that Tom (AND Maddie) kept showing? Like wanting to hug him goodbye before their trip? Or contacting him every few hours to check on him?
He wasn't entirely sure about this strange battle that was raging back and forth in his head. At least, not until he found himself sitting on a beach encouraging the very echidna who had tried to kill him numerous times in the last few days. Encouraging him with the same words he'd heard from Tom.
Those thoughts come back with a solid vengeance when he finds himself facing an early death with those two "best friends" huddled by his side, unable to save him but ensuring that he wouldn't die alone.
