It took some time for the implications to sink in, for Jack to understand the timeline. He had been there, teaching Furiosa bike tricks and running the wheels of commerce for Immortan Joe, while Toast was snatched from her home and locked up into a nightmare a few hallways away.
The dreams didn’t start that night, but slowly oozed into his mind from that day on. Sticky and black, like tar he can’t manage to wash off his skin. And he shouldn’t be able to, is the thing. This is a stain he deserves.

Summary
Furiosa tries to imagine appearing to herself a year ago and explaining her present reality: a world where Jack had survived, and they had the freedom to really be together. If that version of herself could even seriously picture such a world, could imagine how they’d fill their days, she doubts the list would include falling asleep fully-clothed and exhausted most nights, Jack nodding off long before Furiosa is ready to stop planning at her worktable, his even breaths the soundtrack to her late-night tinkering.

Rebuilding the Citadel is hard work. Rebuilding the broken shards of her own humanity isn’t exactly easy, either. Fortunately, Furiosa has help for both - if she can learn how to accept it.
