An image flashed across his mind—there and then gone. The knowing dark eye of a bird, the soft brush of brown wings on his skin. Talons with the power to stun even the strongest man wrapping around his arm. The smell of sun-warmed, dust-coated feathers filling his nose, achingly familiar.

‘Scare’? That made Tahlia genuinely laugh, high-pitched and loud. The sound echoed through the empty hallway, not a single member of the crew to be seen or heard. That made their conversation private, and all the more enjoyable.
“You have this look about you,” Ana continued, uncaring for Tahlia’s reaction. She just stared unblinkingly with what she recognized as latent greed. “It’s hungry and terrifying. I adore it.”
Tahlia's laughter slowly halted. “You’re not doing so well at hiding your look either,” she said coolly, a grin splitting across her face. “What do you want from me, Ana?”
In which Tahlia finds a love best suited for her.
