It’s – it’s incredibly awkward, she’s so much larger than him, and he finds himself with his arms on her shoulders, and then she pulls back and says “I want to pick you up,” to which he nods, and says yes, yes desperately. She smiles against his cheek and then he’s being lifted by – by his waist, and he straddles her waist out of reflex and tightens his grip around her shoulders.

“Do you take all your parishioners out drinking?” Matt asks.
“Okay, first of all, we’re having a beer, not going on a bender,” Foggy says, voice low and warm and going straight to the fizzy nerves under Matt’s skin. This is a strange place to be in. “Second of all, I occasionally have a glass of wine at the ladies’ Bible study night but otherwise you’re a special case.”
“Why?” Matt asks, thumb rubbing the curve of his bottle.
“We’re friends,” Foggy says, like it’s obvious. “Also, you’re an absolute nightmare in a confessional. You get bitchy when I don’t tell you that you’re going to burn in hell for eternity or, like, flog you for whatever cryptic sins you’re confessing to.”
Matt’s fingers clench on the bottle.

Had this bookmarked from years ago. Stumbled on it again in Dec 2022, had definitely read it before, but so long ago my memories were fuzzy and it was almost like reading it for the first time. Re discovered why it was one of my favorites. What an excellent wonderful sad and sexy fic. Thank you returnsandreturns for always writing us the good stuff.

The disconnect is painful. I live in parking lots now; kicking around outside with a cigarette while everyone indoors has that warm fucking moment of human connection. Burgie says I’m on the pity parade. My therapist says I’m adjusting. I don’t know who to listen to so I just listen to neither of them.
