Sussie squawked, and he hopped down to her dresser drawers. Rumi eyed him, not sure what the bird was up as he pecked at the handle. Before she could ask, though, Sussie got the drawer opened, and he hopped inside.
“What are you d—”
His little head emerged with a pacifier in his beak.
“Hey!” Rumi hissed, hopping to her feet. Her face burned as she ran after Sussie, but the bird flew over to her bed’s headboard. “Give me that!” Rumi fussed as quietly as she could. The last thing she needed to do was wake up Mira or Zoey with this. She snatched the pacifier out of Sussie’s beak and glared at him. “How’d you know about this?” she asked. Sussie squawked.

Bucky had sighed. "I would if I could, Stevie. I'm as healthy as a horse, though, which means I’ve got to go." They were sitting at the dinner table, eating day-old rations. The bread was more like hard tack and Steve idly found himself wondering if the formula he gave Bucky was a better alternative. The enlistment letter loomed between them, typed in old ink and missing a few odd letters.
Steve frowned. "You're not though, Buck. You could get out of it if-" Steve swallowed heavily, avoiding Bucky's eyes, "if you told 'em you were Little."
