"It's not-" Jack exhaled, hard, through his nose, rubbed the back of his neck. "It's not that we don't want you around."
"I know," Quinn said.
"It's a hockey thing."
"I know, Jack."
"Because if it wasn't a hockey thing—"
"It's a hockey thing," Quinn said, and there was something in his voice that was not quite patience and not quite the other thing, something in between, that closed the sentence gently but firmly. "I understand. Really. It's a hockey thing and it makes sense and Minnesota is going to be great."

Quinn was no stranger to the cold. From the damp slush of a Toronto January to the harsh bite of a December in Ann Arbor, he could barely remember a time before that cold was all he knew, hardening his skin and dancing under his skates. And at some point - creeping, quiet, and without warning - that cold managed to seep through, piercing his heart and finding a permanent home flowing through his veins.
Maybe one day Quinn will feel sorry, feel bad, maybe even regret leaving it all behind. But today was not that day. Even though the bitter December air here was unlike any of the familiar cold that Quinn had ever felt, the promise of a new beginning thawed him from the inside out as he stepped into a new life.

Quinn tries his best to appear happy, or happy enough that no one questions him. It’s not like he’s sad, exactly - he’s overjoyed for his brother to be drafted and so proud of him for going fourth overall. Just like he was beside himself when Jack went first overall.
The issue is… well, the issue is complicated. It’s mostly jealousy, mixed with a heaping scoop of loneliness and a sprinkle of insecurity. Jealous that his brothers will get to play together, lonely because they’ll be together without him, and insecure because - well, first and fourth overall. Not seventh.
So he pastes a smile on his face and knows that no one will look deeper because no one ever does look deeper at him. Even if he wasn’t smiling, they’d probably just think it was normal, because Quinn being serious or unhappy is normal. Jack’s the one with boundless energy and enthusiasm, and he’s certainly showing that now, and Luke takes after Jack more than Quinn, though a bit more toned down than Jack’s golden retriever demeanor. He’s practiced at putting up a facade, pretending things don’t matter to him when they actually do, setting aside his own wants and needs for his brothers’.
