Zhou Zishu heard the electronic buzzer from the back room where he was working on a design for tomorrow’s flash drop-in. It was a small but comfortable lounge where the in-shop tattooists hung out, had a leggy leather couch, speakers, and a low mid-century table where the others ate their lunch, but he was currently using it for his drafts. The others all used tablets but he still worked on paper. He was old-school that way. He had learned calligraphy and watercolor before he’d started tattooing.
Still, none of the in-shop artists had appointments on a Tuesday, so he dropped the pencil and wound his way to the front.
There was a man at the front desk, tall, with bleached platinum hair like silk cascading down his back, leaning on the counter with his chin on his palm...

Wen Kexing had been waiting the better part of a shichen at his haphazard fortune-telling stall with the hope of sneaking a peek at Jushui Pavilion’s supposedly handsome An Wang. The line to enter the pavilion for Yuedan Commentary snaked around the corner of the stone walls, and it was so long Wen Kexing feared he not only would be unable to see the famed royal scholar even if the gate opened, but that the crowd would exceed occupancy before he managed his way in.
It neared midday when a figure shadowed the sun before him, and Wen Kexing glanced up from where his arm supported his cheek, a divot in his hand from his chin. The stranger was robed in expensive silks with an ebony veil, and Wen Kexing thought, by the build of the tall figure and his elegant and purposeful gait, the stranger must be an extraordinary beauty underneath.
Without hesitation, Wen Kexing called out to him from behind his plank-and-barrel table. “Daren!” he said with his lip upturned. “A beauty such as yourself cannot fail to have his fortune read lest he not discover which of the many eyes that follow him intend him harm. Why don’t you allow this seer a moment with your fine palm for a life-saving reading?”

And perhaps it’s the reference to our long-past days, or perhaps it’s my wife’s streak of possessive jealousy, or the spaces in between one another’s lives we’ve missed, but Wen Kexing diverts the topic to a discussion about fragility.
