But it seems that the version of himself that can connect with Robby, see eye-to-eye with him, talk to him without feeling like a gut punch, died the day of Pittfest last year.

Bob nods slowly. There’s a quiet between them that feels full, not empty. And then, after a moment, he steps forward and hugs John—just presses his forehead into his shoulder, breathing in the warmth of him. John wraps his arms around him without hesitation, his hand resting on the back of Bob’s neck.
Bob tries to navigate through his unlabeled relationship with John, while violently ignoring the dark pull that is slowly dragging him down.

Bob’s jaw tightens. “Don’t call me that.”
John doesn’t apologize, just shrugs under him. “Hit me then.”
Bob hesitates again. Then he pulls his arm back—still straddling John—and goes for it. A clean punch, not fast, but committed.
John is lonely and somewhat depressed, but so is Bob. Somewhere along the line, they get used to each other’s silences, odd as they find it.

Well, it was earth-shattering for Buck. It was world-tilting, gravity-defying, the kind of shift that left everything off-kilter, as if someone had reached inside his chest and twisted. Like standing in the ocean when the tide drags the sand from beneath his feet, leaving him wobbling, unsteady, bracing for a wave that never comes.
Like standing on the pier, watching the wave looming over and being stuck in place.

“Bakersfield,” Buck answers quietly as he pays the cashier and pulls forward to the next window. “Felt like my stomach was starting to eat itself, figured you’d be hungry too.”
“Famished,” Eddie replies, taking the food Buck hands him. Opening the bag he finds exactly what he would have ordered for himself had he been awake. He stares at the food, unblinking as he turns to look at Buck (who has pulled in to a parking space so they can eat).

“Do you see any single fathers?” Eddie retorts. The room goes silent, and when he looks up everyone is staring at him. Hen looks confused, Bobby raises an eyebrow at him, Chimney looks like he’s trying not to laugh, and Buck…he can’t read the expression on Buck’s face.
